A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Software, fintech and internet themes are leading as investors rotate away from AI hardware, while semiconductors, bitcoin miners and AI infrastructure remain the weakest pockets of the tape.

Investment Digest

The thematic setup is still defined by rotation rather than outright risk-off. Wednesday’s market finished slightly lower, but breadth was positive, equal-weight outperformed, and software, financials, healthcare, media and China tech gained even as semiconductors and memory sold off after a record Q2 run. The morning update points to another round of AI infrastructure pressure, with South Korea down sharply overnight and investors focused on concentration risk, potential excess capacity, META’s possible move into cloud infrastructure, AAPL’s memory-supplier negotiations in China, and continued uncertainty around AI model economics. Warsh did little to materially change the policy setup, but NFP now matters because a solid jobs print would reinforce the resilient-growth narrative while keeping inflation and Fed reaction-function risk alive. Lower oil and Strait of Hormuz reopening traction are still helping the inflation narrative, but the tape is clearly saying investors prefer software, fintech and broader growth rebounds over the most crowded semiconductor and AI hardware exposures.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show software and internet/fintech rebounds at the top of the leaderboard. WCLD rose 3.54%, ARKF gained 3.50%, OGIG advanced 3.39%, IAI rose 3.35% and CRPT gained 3.26%. Software strength is especially notable because IGV rose 3.02% even though it remains down 13.32% over 1M and has seen $(1.94B) of 1M outflows, suggesting a tactical rebound rather than a fully confirmed allocation shift. The weakest themes were concentrated in semiconductors, AI infrastructure and bitcoin mining: PSI fell 7.14%, WGMI lost 6.82%, SOXX declined 6.41%, FTXL dropped 6.38% and SOXQ fell 6.24%. Flows remain supportive of broad beta and selected AI hardware despite the daily selloff, with VTI taking in $6.90B over 1M, SOXX $3.22B, SCHD $3.13B, SMH $2.19B and AGG $1.93B. However, QQQ’s $(5.06B) 1M outflow, IGV’s $(1.94B) outflow and PSI’s $(852.97M) outflow show that investors are actively cutting some growth, software and semiconductor sleeves even as they maintain exposure to broader equity beta.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay invested in the AI theme, but shift the active risk budget away from the most crowded semiconductor and AI infrastructure expressions until the Asia-led unwind stabilizes. SOXX and SMH still have strong 1M and YTD inflows, but both are now lagging sharply on the day, while PSI combines a 13.54% 1M return with a 7.14% daily decline and $(852.97M) of 1M outflows. Software is the better tactical rebound sleeve, with WCLD, XSW, CLOU and IGV all stronger, but IGV’s large 1M outflow argues against treating the move as fully confirmed. The preferred posture is overweight selective software, cybersecurity, quality AI infrastructure and dividend/value ballast, while keeping semiconductor exposure smaller and more selective and staying underweight bitcoin miners, flow-negative metals, broad momentum and China-sensitive internet risk until NFP, ISM services and FOMC minutes clear.
