Theme Signal
Biotech, housing and travel led the latest theme tape, while blockchain, silver, miners and energy services lagged as investors rotated away from crowded momentum and commodity beta.
Investment Digest
The thematic setup is turning more constructive this morning as Nasdaq futures rally on renewed memory and semiconductor strength following MU’s blowout results and guidance, but the latest data still reflect Wednesday’s more mixed tape, when consumer, housing, travel and selected cyclicals outperformed while semis and memory remained unable to sustain an early bounce. The big tactical question is whether MU resets the AI hardware trade after the recent mechanical unwind, which has been framed more as a market-structure and concentration event than a fundamental break in the AI capex story. Lower oil is also helping risk appetite, with the continued normalization of Gulf flows easing the inflation and rate-pressure narrative, though the Fed remains a lingering overhang given hawkish rhetoric, persistent services inflation concerns and ongoing Treasury-supply scrutiny. The better posture is to re-risk selectively into AI hardware and software if MU’s read-through holds, while recognizing that the latest theme data still show investors rewarding housing, travel and biotech more than the crowded semiconductor sleeve.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show ARKG up 7.14%, ITB up 6.15%, XHB up 5.62%, LABU up 5.45% and JETS up 4.17%, pointing to a leadership mix built around biotech, housing and travel rather than the prior semiconductor/memory leadership complex. That aligns with Wednesday’s broader consumer and reopening tone, helped by lower crude and a rate reprieve. The weakest themes were concentrated in blockchain and Natural Resources, with CRPT down 7.61%, SLV down 7.09%, WGMI down 5.95%, BKCH down 5.87% and DAPP down 5.01%. Flow data still show strong support for broad beta and AI hardware: SPY took in $15.85B over 1M, QQQ $8.04B, VTI $6.50B, SCHD $3.28B and SOXX $2.92B. However, outflows from EFV at $(5.69B), GLD at $(2.95B), KWEB at $(1.07B), MTUM at $(1.02B) and SMH at $(721.80M) show investors are still reducing international value, gold, China internet, momentum and one of the most crowded semiconductor proxies.
Bottom Line
The tactical takeaway is to re-engage the AI hardware trade selectively after MU’s reset, but avoid assuming the entire momentum complex is out of the woods. SOXX remains flow-confirmed with $2.92B of 1M inflows, $6.34B YTD inflows and an 11.99% 1M return, while SMH’s 1M outflow shows investors are still trimming the most crowded semiconductor expression. Housing, travel and biotech are showing the strongest latest price action, helped by lower oil and rate relief, while blockchain and metals remain weak. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, memory, AI infrastructure, quality software, housing/travel beneficiaries and tactical biotech, while staying underweight blockchain, flow-negative Natural Resources, China internet and broad momentum until MU follow-through, PCE inflation and quarter-end positioning become clearer.
