Theme Signal
Blockchain and cybersecurity led the latest rebound while China internet and emerging-market growth lagged, but improving semiconductor flows suggest the AI correction may finally be attracting more durable sponsorship beneath today’s renewed risk-off tape.
Investment Digest
The thematic setup remains volatile rather than decisively bearish. Wednesday’s AI rebound was supported by strong SpaceX results, SMCI’s positive preannouncement and continued evidence of robust compute/capex demand, but Thursday futures are sharply lower as investors again focus on the cost of that buildout. META’s results were fundamentally constructive but kept capex and monetization under scrutiny, TSLA’s lower capex guidance disappointed investors looking for accelerated investment in new initiatives, and LRCX failed to clear an exceptionally high expectations bar. At the same time, oil is rebounding on renewed Middle East escalation risk while Treasuries benefit from the AI selloff and flight-to-quality demand. That combination reinforces the distinction driving the thematic market: AI demand remains strong, but financing, returns on capital and earnings conversion now determine who gets rewarded. With the Fed blackout underway and only claims on today’s calendar, earnings and Friday’s PMIs/inflation expectations are likely to dominate the next move.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show blockchain leading the rebound, but the move still looks tactical: CRPT surged 5.16%, BKCH gained 3.97%, STCE rose 3.93% and DAPP added 3.88%, yet all four remain deeply negative over 1M and most continue to show weak or negative fund flows. Cybersecurity looks better sponsored, with BUG up 3.78%, HACK +3.24% and CIBR +2.72%; CIBR has also attracted $842M over 1M. More importantly, semiconductor flows have flipped sharply more constructive: SMH drew $1.31B and SOXX $877M over 1M, for roughly $2.19B of combined inflows, even though their 1M returns remain -6.60% and -8.76%. The weakest latest themes were China internet and emerging-market growth—KWEB fell 2.51%, EMQQ 2.31% and CNXT 1.66%—along with travel technology and copper miners. Broad allocation remains selective: QQQ attracted $4.45B over 1M while momentum ETF MTUM lost $(5.43B) and ARKK lost $(2.71B), reinforcing the shift away from generic high-beta exposure toward more targeted technology leadership.
Bottom Line
The tactical message is that AI hardware sponsorship is beginning to repair even though today’s futures tape remains risk-off. SOXX and SMH now show roughly $2.19B of combined 1M inflows and approximately $23.82B YTD, a meaningful improvement in the flow signal despite still-negative 1M performance. That does not eliminate financing or valuation risk, but it strengthens the case for selectively rebuilding semiconductor exposure rather than treating the entire AI complex as broken. Cybersecurity remains attractive because price and flows are aligned, while QQQ’s $4.45B of 1M inflows shows broad platform technology is also attracting capital. Conversely, the blockchain surge lacks intermediate confirmation, ARKK and momentum remain in heavy outflow, and China-related growth continues to deteriorate. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, cybersecurity, broad/platform technology and dividend-quality exposure; incrementally rebuild AI hardware where earnings confirm demand and margins, while remaining underweight broad momentum, speculative disruptive growth, China internet and weaker precious-metals/small-cap exposures.
