Theme Signal
Biotech, crypto and software led a sharp high-beta rebound while hydrogen, electrification and semiconductor exposures lagged, suggesting tactical dip-buying is emerging even as AI hardware sponsorship remains impaired.
Investment Digest
The thematic setup is stabilizing at the end of a difficult week, but the recovery remains highly rotational. Thursday produced much better breadth—equal-weight S&P 500 outperformed the cap-weighted index by roughly 100 bp and the Russell 2000 rallied 1.38%—even as the AI complex lagged for a seventh consecutive session. The large Treasury rally and declining October Fed-hike odds have reduced one valuation headwind, but they have not yet restored leadership to semiconductors, memory or heavily financed AI infrastructure. TSM and Anthropic continue to demonstrate strong absolute demand and revenue growth, but investors are increasingly focused on marginal growth, capital intensity and credit risk rather than simply the size of the AI opportunity. Friday’s setup is somewhat calmer: KOSPI has stabilized, crude is edging lower and Fed Chair Warsh’s noncommittal remarks reinforced expectations for an October hold. The next meaningful test shifts to Q3 earnings, with META and TSLA among next week’s major reports, making earnings conversion and capex discipline more important than incremental AI demand headlines.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show a sharp rebound in several of the areas hit hardest during the recent selloff. LABU jumped 6.15%, while crypto exposures BITQ and DAPP each gained 4.41%, BKCH added 4.22% and CRPT rose 4.07%. Software also participated, with XSW up 3.84% and WCLD up 3.72%, while miners rebounded through GDX +4.34% and SILJ +3.64%. The weakest areas remained closely tied to capital-intensive growth and energy infrastructure: HYDR fell 2.96%, POW declined 2.49%, PSI dropped 2.48%, ENFR lost 1.93% and MLPX fell 1.83%. The flow picture remains more important than the one-day bounce. CIBR has attracted $1.34B over 1M and IGV $726M, giving cybersecurity and software improving sponsorship, while SMH and SOXX have combined 1M outflows of roughly $(1.06B) despite remaining positive over 1M. Broad growth is holding up better—QQQ has attracted $2.52B over 1M—suggesting investors are still willing to own growth but increasingly prefer platforms and software over crowded semiconductor exposure.
Bottom Line
The tactical message is that breadth is improving faster than leadership in the AI hardware complex. Semiconductor fundamentals remain strong and SOXX/SMH still hold roughly $18.88B of combined YTD inflows, but their roughly $(1.06B) of combined 1M outflows, seven-session SOX losing streak and continued weakness in PSI show that sponsorship has not yet repaired. Software and cybersecurity look cleaner: IGV has attracted $726M over 1M while CIBR has drawn $1.34B, suggesting investors are shifting toward AI beneficiaries with lower capital intensity and clearer recurring-revenue economics. The biotech and crypto rebounds are notable but remain tactical given deeply negative 1W/1M trends, while the recent $2.85B of IWM inflows against a -3.53% 1M return still looks like dip-buying rather than established small-cap leadership. The preferred posture is overweight software, cybersecurity, broad-market beta and dividend exposure; maintain strategic semiconductor positions at reduced tactical weights, selectively add quality AI infrastructure on stabilization, and treat biotech, crypto and small caps as tactical trades until price trends and flows provide stronger confirmation.
