Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Biotechnology provided the only convincing upside leadership while blockchain, AI infrastructure and semiconductors sold off sharply, reinforcing a defensive rotation as investors reassess AI growth expectations, financing risk and valuation.

Investment Digest

The thematic setup has shifted decisively toward risk reduction after Wednesday’s first 1%+ S&P 500 decline in 53 sessions and another sharp leg lower across semiconductors, memory, neoclouds and AI infrastructure. The latest market update showed the selloff broadening beyond chips into software, networking and tech hardware even as Treasuries rallied from their post-CPI highs and healthcare, staples and integrated energy provided defensive leadership. Pasted markdown Thursday’s premarket deepens that divergence: Treasury yields are falling 8–11 bp in a safe-haven move, yet Nasdaq futures remain down more than 1%, suggesting lower discount rates are no longer enough by themselves to stabilize the AI complex. TSM and Anthropic continue to report strong absolute demand and revenue, but the market is increasingly focused on the rate of change—whether AI growth can keep accelerating fast enough to justify extraordinary valuations, capital requirements and margin pressure. Today’s PPI, retail sales and labor data therefore matter on two fronts: softer inflation could stabilize duration-sensitive growth, but weak consumption would reinforce the defensive rotation already visible beneath the indexes.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show an unusually stark split between biotechnology and nearly every speculative technology exposure. BBH rose 2.18%, PBE gained 1.87%, IBB advanced 1.61%, FBT added 1.27% and IDNA rose 1.20%, giving biotech/genomics all five positions at the top of the daily leaderboard. The downside was far more violent: WGMI plunged 10.67%, BKCH fell 8.20%, STCE lost 7.54%, DAPP declined 7.20% and AI-infrastructure ETF TCAI dropped 6.75%. Semiconductor deterioration is now being confirmed by flows as well as price: SOXX and SMH fell 4.50% and 3.98% on the day, are down 7.79% and 7.00% over 1W, and have combined 1M outflows of roughly $(1.20B). QQQ, by contrast, still attracted $1.36B over 1M, showing that investors are reducing concentrated hardware exposure faster than broad megacap growth. Defensive allocation trends remain clear through VTI, SCHD and AGG, which collectively attracted more than $10.7B over 1M.

Bottom Line

The tactical message is to stop treating every AI pullback as an automatic buy signal until sponsorship stabilizes. The structural semiconductor story remains intact—SOXX and SMH still hold roughly $19.02B of combined YTD inflows and retain positive 1M returns—but their combined $(1.20B) of 1M outflows, sharp weekly losses and repeated failure to respond to strong fundamental demand updates show that the market is resetting its required return for AI capital spending. TCAI’s 6.75% daily decline and BAI’s $(533M) of 1M outflows extend that caution beyond chips into broader AI infrastructure. Biotechnology is showing the cleanest current relative strength, led by BBH and IDNA, although the group should remain selective rather than leveraged given LABU’s -21.75% 1M return. The preferred posture is overweight quality biotech, broad-market exposure, dividends and core fixed income, with cybersecurity retained as a selective growth allocation; maintain strategic semiconductor exposure at reduced tactical weights and remain underweight blockchain, broad momentum, small caps and highly financed AI infrastructure until flows, credit spreads and price leadership begin confirming the fundamental demand story again.
