Theme Signal
Blockchain and semiconductors led the latest theme tape, while gaming, biotech, uranium/nuclear and cybersecurity lagged as lower oil and yields helped re-open the risk trade.
Investment Digest
The thematic backdrop is improving after last week’s uneven tape, with Monday futures higher, Treasury yields lower and crude retreating as Saudi export flows recover and Strait of Hormuz traffic improves. That combination is giving the AI trade room to extend its rebound from the frontier-model pacing selloff, while recent compute-demand commentary remains constructive across semiconductors, memory, infrastructure and agentic AI. Friday’s underlying tape was still narrow—AI hardware outperformed while equal-weight lagged and front-end yields backed up—but the latest setup is more supportive for duration-sensitive growth. The next external catalyst is the September 23–25 U.S.-China summit, with Reuters reporting that trade, AI, supply chains and geopolitical issues are expected to feature in discussions. (Reuters) Macro risk is lighter this week, leaving flash PMIs, Treasury supply and Fed commentary as the main domestic inputs.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show an aggressive return to blockchain and AI hardware. CRPT surged 11.89%, BKCH gained 8.86%, STCE rose 8.29%, BITQ added 8.26% and DAPP advanced 8.17%; WGMI was also up 7.14%. Semiconductor breadth was strong just below the leaders, with PSI up 3.83%, TCAI up 2.79%, SOXQ up 2.77%, SOXX up 2.69% and SMH up 2.21%. The weakest areas were gaming, biotech, nuclear and cybersecurity, with BETZ down 3.47%, LABU off 2.85%, NLR down 2.60%, SBIO lower by 2.40% and BUG down 2.16%. Flow data reinforce the improving hardware signal: SMH attracted $4.76B over 1M and SOXX $3.68B, while momentum ETF SPMO drew a striking $7.16B. At the same time, SPY saw $(23.96B) of 1M outflows and QQQ $(7.55B), creating a pronounced divergence between broad-index vehicles and more targeted factor/theme exposures.
Bottom Line
The tactical takeaway is to lean further into the AI/hardware recovery while treating the blockchain surge as higher-beta tactical leadership rather than a core allocation signal. Semiconductor sponsorship is now compelling: SOXX and SMH have combined YTD inflows of roughly $24.93B, SMH drew $4.76B over 1M, and both ETFs are back to positive 1M returns. Momentum is also attracting capital through SPMO, suggesting investors are selectively rebuilding exposure after the recent unwind. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, momentum, broad-market beta and dividend/value, with tactical blockchain exposure; remain underweight small caps, weaker biotech, uranium/nuclear and lagging cybersecurity until the improvement in oil, rates and market breadth proves durable.
