A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Blockchain, software, cloud and gold miners led the latest theme tape, while cannabis, leveraged biotech, oil services and travel lagged ahead of the August employment report.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is firmer but still selective after Thursday’s rally, with software, Mag 7, banks, alts, apparel retail and space outperforming while energy, chemicals and defensives lagged. The latest market update showed the upside was driven largely by rate stabilization after Fed Governor Waller signaled support for a September hold if disinflation continues, while AI sentiment was helped by positive compute/capex commentary, new model releases and strong enterprise-software earnings. Friday’s setup is quiet ahead of the August employment report, with NFP expected to matter less than next week’s CPI for the September FOMC decision, but the risk setup still hinges on whether payrolls are soft enough to keep yields contained without damaging the resilient-growth narrative. The key thematic message is that AI risk appetite has broadened from semiconductors back into software and cloud, while blockchain is benefiting from the bitcoin rally and precious metals continue to hold a hedge bid.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show blockchain dominating the daily leaderboard, with BKCH up 10.51%, CRPT up 10.24%, BITQ up 9.80%, DAPP up 9.67% and STCE up 9.17%. Software and cloud also participated strongly, with IGV up 3.41%, CLOU up 3.68%, WCLD up 3.31% and XSW up 2.92%, confirming that Thursday’s AI-monetization and enterprise-software bid carried into thematic ETFs. The weakest areas were cannabis, leveraged biotech, oil services and travel: YOLO fell 2.10%, LABU lost 1.91%, OIH declined 1.55%, AWAY fell 1.12% and KRBN dropped 0.99%. Flows remain concentrated in broad growth, broad beta, gold and dividend/value, with QQQ attracting $12.10B over 1M, VTI $7.39B, GLD $6.66B, SCHD $3.85B and EFV $2.02B. Semiconductor flows remain the key divergence, with SOXX seeing $(3.16B) of 1M outflows and SMH losing $(1.45B), even though both remain major YTD inflow vehicles.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive, but keep the portfolio balanced ahead of payrolls and next week’s CPI. Blockchain has the strongest latest price signal, software/cloud are regaining leadership after enterprise AI earnings, and broad growth flows remain strong through QQQ. Precious metals remain an important hedge, with GLD taking in $6.66B over 1M, though GLD and SLV still carry YTD outflows. The main caution remains semiconductors: SOXX and SMH have combined 1M outflows of roughly $4.61B despite still-large YTD inflows, so AI exposure should remain focused on the highest-quality compute/capex and software monetization beneficiaries. The preferred posture is overweight broad growth, broad beta, software/cloud, tactical blockchain, dividend/value and precious metals, while keeping semiconductors selective and underweighting cannabis, leveraged biotech, oil services, travel, small caps and broad momentum until the employment report and next week’s CPI clarify the next Fed/rates impulse.
