A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Cannabis, biotech and gaming led the latest theme tape, while blockchain, travel, housing and cloud software lagged as investors waited on July payrolls and next week’s CPI.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is constructive but cautious after Thursday’s mostly lower session and ahead of July NFP. The latest market update showed no clear single driver, with strong Q2 earnings and upbeat revision dynamics still supporting sentiment, but scrutiny around high bars in semiconductors and software, unresolved Strait of Hormuz negotiations, and Fed reaction-function uncertainty keeping investors selective. Software earnings were better overnight, with AI repeatedly cited as a growth tailwind, but the tape is not uniformly rewarding software: the latest theme data show cloud software among the laggards despite strong individual earnings reports. The near-term setup hinges on whether payrolls are soft enough to ease rate anxiety without undermining the solid macro narrative, with CPI, PPI and retail sales waiting next week.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show cannabis at the top of the daily leaderboard, with MSOS up 7.67%, CNBS up 5.92% and MJ up 3.33%. Biotech also participated through LABU up 2.60%, while gaming/esports added to the rebound with ESPO up 2.46% and NERD up 2.25%. The weakest themes were blockchain, travel, housing and software: WGMI fell 3.52%, DAPP lost 3.01%, JETS declined 2.65%, LFSC fell 2.48% and STCE dropped 2.42%. Flows remain heavily supportive of semiconductors even though performance is still mixed, with SOXX attracting $5.12B over 1M and $12.49B YTD, while SMH attracted $1.94B over 1M and $9.01B YTD. Broad beta remains supported through VTI, while QQQ saw $(4.25B) of 1M outflows.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive but keep the risk budget selective into payrolls and CPI. Cannabis is leading tactically, but weak 1M returns keep the move more trading-oriented than durable. Semiconductors remain the most important flow-confirmed AI sleeve, with SOXX and SMH combining for $7.05B of 1M inflows and $21.50B YTD, even though both are still negative over 1M. Broad growth remains under pressure, with QQQ seeing $(4.25B) of 1M outflows. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, dividend/value ballast, broad beta, cybersecurity and high-quality software, while keeping cannabis tactical and underweighting blockchain, travel, small caps, flow-negative metals and broad QQQ-style growth until July payrolls and next week’s CPI clarify the Fed/risk backdrop.
