Theme Signal
Blockchain and semiconductors led the latest theme tape as momentum rebounded sharply, while insurance, gaming, REITs, housing and low-volatility dividend themes lagged.
Investment Digest
The thematic backdrop is improving after Thursday’s sharp momentum rebound, with semiconductors, memory and AI infrastructure regaining leadership as investors increasingly frame the recent unwind as a technical/deleveraging event rather than a fundamental break in the AI compute story. The latest market update showed momentum as the day’s dominant driver, with support from hyperscaler earnings, better compute/capex demand signals, and fading concern around forced unwind after a major AI-focused hedge fund exited public positions. Friday’s setup remains supportive, with futures higher, South Korea and Japan sharply stronger, and AMZN’s better AWS growth adding another positive data point for AI infrastructure demand. AAPL’s weaker guide keeps supply constraints, input pressure and the high-bar earnings dynamic in focus, but the broader signal has improved: investors are again willing to buy semiconductors, AI infrastructure and higher-beta digital assets while stepping away from defensive rate-sensitive themes.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show a major rebound in blockchain and semiconductors. WGMI rose 22.10%, BKCH gained 15.09%, STCE advanced 12.06%, PSI added 11.74% and DAPP rose 11.62%. Semiconductor breadth improved materially, with TCAI up 11.57%, FTXL up 8.87%, SOXX up 8.50%, SOXQ up 8.12% and SMH up 6.88%, though most remain deeply negative over 1M. The weakest areas were defensive and rate-sensitive: KIE fell 1.99%, BETZ lost 1.95%, SPHD declined 1.82%, HOMZ fell 1.63% and COWZ dropped 1.59%. Flows remain heavily supportive of AI hardware, with SOXX attracting $7.43B over 1M and $15.17B YTD, while SMH attracted $4.25B over 1M and $10.40B YTD. Broad beta also remains supported through VTI, while VUG, IGV, KLMN, PDP and EFA saw the largest 1M outflows.
Bottom Line
The tactical takeaway is to re-engage momentum selectively, but not assume the AI hardware repair is complete. SOXX and SMH remain the clearest flow-confirmed semiconductor sleeves, with combined 1M inflows of $11.68B and combined YTD inflows of $25.57B, but both remain sharply negative over 1M. Blockchain’s rebound is powerful but still tactical given weak monthly returns. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, quality software, dividend/value ballast and broad beta, while treating blockchain as a trading sleeve and staying underweight defensive low-volatility themes, REIT/housing laggards, climate beta and broad growth outflow vehicles until next week’s ISM, services data and payrolls confirm whether the momentum rebound can broaden.
