A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Biotech, blockchain, uranium/nuclear and semiconductors led the latest theme tape, while energy producers, cybersecurity and cloud software lagged ahead of NVDA earnings and Jackson Hole.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is trying to stabilize after last week’s momentum selloff and Monday’s renewed AI weakness, with Tuesday’s tape showing a bounce in semiconductors, storage and AI infrastructure while lower oil and firmer Treasuries helped ease some macro pressure. The market remains focused on NVDA earnings after the close, Friday’s Warsh speech at Jackson Hole, and this morning’s July income, spending, PCE, GDP and durable-goods data. Lower crude has not yet delivered a broad cyclical/reopening bid, and software is facing renewed AI-disruption scrutiny after weaker INTU guidance, but the broader AI trade is not broken: SMTC, AMD, META and other AI-linked updates continue to support the infrastructure narrative. The key tactical message is that investors are willing to re-engage with risk, but flows still favor broad growth, broad beta, metals and dividend/value while semiconductor exposure remains selective.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show biotech and blockchain at the top of the daily leaderboard. LABU rose 8.82%, BKCH gained 5.48%, WGMI advanced 4.76%, DAPP added 4.70% and IDNA rose 4.56%. Uranium/nuclear also strengthened, with NLR up 4.46% and SMRF up 3.60%, while semiconductors rebounded with XSD up 1.94%, SMH up 1.65%, SOXX up 1.56% and FTXL up 1.50%. The weakest areas were energy producers, cybersecurity and cloud software: FCG fell 1.90%, XOP lost 1.88%, BUG declined 1.68%, IHAK dropped 1.60% and WCLD fell 1.36%. Flows remain heavily concentrated in broad growth and defensive ballast, with QQQ attracting $17.87B over 1M, VTI $6.69B, GLD $5.52B, SCHD $3.90B and EFV $2.64B. Semiconductor flows are still mixed despite the price bounce, with SOXX seeing $(646.86M) of 1M outflows and FTXL losing $(835.40M), while SMH attracted $654.28M.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive but keep the portfolio selective into NVDA and Jackson Hole. Biotech, blockchain and uranium/nuclear have the strongest latest price signal, while broad growth and broad beta flows remain healthy through QQQ and VTI. Semiconductors are stabilizing on price, but SOXX and FTXL still show 1M outflows and negative 1M returns, so the sleeve remains a tactical rather than indiscriminate overweight ahead of NVDA. The preferred posture is overweight broad growth, broad beta, biotech, blockchain, uranium/nuclear, dividend/value and precious metals, while keeping semiconductors selective and underweighting energy producers, cybersecurity laggards, cloud software after its strong 1M run, small caps and broad momentum until PCE, NVDA earnings and Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech clarify the next rates/growth impulse.
