A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Blockchain rebounded sharply while biotech and clean energy lagged, but the morning setup is more constructive for semiconductors as investors look for another AI/momentum stabilization attempt.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is trying to stabilize after last week’s AI/momentum drawdown and Monday’s faded rebound. The latest market update showed semis and memory among the better performers early Monday before the bounce lost steam, while banks, capital goods, transports, homebuilders and industrial cyclicals lagged. The narrative remains dominated by the same crosscurrents: market-structure pressure, hyperscaler capex scrutiny, open-source model competition, geopolitics and a quiet macro calendar that shifts attention toward earnings, with GOOGL and TSLA among the key near-term tests. Tuesday’s setup is firmer, with futures higher, Japan and South Korea rebounding, gold and silver stronger, and investors again looking for the AI compute/capex story to regain footing as earnings activity picks up. The key tactical question is whether semiconductor flows can finally translate into price stabilization, or whether the group remains vulnerable to high expectations, cost pressure and further de-risking.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show a sharp blockchain rebound, with WGMI up 10.78%, BKCH up 8.90%, BITQ up 6.46%, DAPP up 6.45% and IBLC up 6.17%. The move looks more like a tactical bounce than a durable leadership shift, however, given negative 1M returns across the group. The weakest themes were biotech, cannabis and clean energy: LABU fell 6.20%, ARKG lost 3.99%, LFSC declined 2.86%, YOLO fell 2.79% and SBIO dropped 2.45%. Flows still heavily favor semiconductors despite weak monthly performance, with SOXX attracting $8.05B over 1M and $14.94B YTD. The split remains notable: SMH saw $(4.97B) of 1M outflows despite $8.06B YTD inflows, showing investors are rotating within the semiconductor sleeve rather than abandoning it outright.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to allow for a momentum rebound, but keep the active risk budget focused on the cleaner parts of the AI trade. SOXX is still the strongest flow-confirmed semiconductor sleeve, with $8.05B of 1M inflows and $14.94B YTD, but its -18.03% 1M return shows that buyers are stepping into a drawdown rather than a confirmed uptrend. Blockchain’s rebound is high beta and tactical, not durable leadership, given deeply negative 1M returns. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, quality software, cybersecurity and dividend/value ballast, while keeping blockchain tactical and staying underweight high-volatility biotech, cannabis, broad small-cap beta and flow-negative metals until earnings provide clearer confirmation of AI capex durability.
