A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

REITs, water infrastructure and housing led the latest theme tape as investors rotated away from AI hardware, while blockchain, semiconductors, hydrogen and high-beta biotech remained under pressure.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop has shifted more clearly toward risk control. Thursday’s market showed another rotation out of semiconductors, memory and AI infrastructure despite TSM’s strong capex guidance, while equal-weight outperformed and investors moved into REITs, staples, healthcare, homebuilders, transportation and other defensive or rate-sensitive pockets. Friday’s setup is more cautious, with S&P futures lower, global equities weaker, oil higher and investors increasingly questioning whether the AI trade’s weakness is still purely technical or beginning to reflect concerns around capex sustainability, open-source competition, China DRAM competition, data-center backlash and an elevated earnings bar. The key message is that AI infrastructure remains strategically important, but the near-term tape is rewarding defensive rotation, yield sensitivity and infrastructure durability over crowded momentum.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show REITs and infrastructure-style exposures leading. RWR rose 2.92%, BBRE gained 2.63%, USRT advanced 2.59%, SCHH added 2.46% and PHO gained 2.37%. Housing also screened well, with ITB up 2.30% and HOMZ up 2.26%, consistent with the move into rate-sensitive and domestically focused cyclicals as AI hardware weakened. The weakest areas were concentrated in blockchain, semiconductors, hydrogen and high-volatility biotech: WGMI fell 9.25%, LABU lost 8.20%, BKCH declined 7.11%, DAPP fell 6.21% and HYDR dropped 5.87%. Flows still show investors adding to semiconductor exposure despite poor price action, with SOXX attracting $5.82B over 1M and $12.50B YTD, while SMH attracted $1.68B over 1M and $7.74B YTD. However, broad growth and value outflows are notable, with VTV, VUG, GLD, EFA and ARKK leading 1M redemptions.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay defensive and selective. SOXX and SMH remain heavily flow-supported, with combined 1M inflows of $7.49B and combined YTD inflows of $20.24B, but both are now down sharply over 1M and continue to lag on the day. REITs, water infrastructure, housing and dividend exposure are offering better short-term leadership as investors rotate away from AI hardware and high-beta momentum. The preferred posture is overweight REITs, water/grid infrastructure, dividend/value ballast and selective AI hardware, while underweighting blockchain, high-volatility biotech, hydrogen, flow-negative metals and broad disruptive growth until Big Tech earnings, the July FOMC setup and US-Iran headlines give the market a cleaner risk signal.
