A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Blockchain and semiconductors are rebounding after Friday’s sharp AI/momentum selloff, while REITs, clean energy, electrification and cybersecurity remain under pressure.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is attempting to stabilize after Friday’s sharp de-risking event and Monday’s partial rebound, with futures firmer, oil lower, Treasuries firmer and Asian technology shares settling after the prior rout. The latest trading updates show the AI compute and capex narrative still intact, supported by the NVDA/SK Hynix multi-year AI memory agreement, reports of Google ordering Intel AI chips, Amazon’s data-center fiber agreement with Corning, and OpenAI’s confidential IPO filing, but the market is still processing the damage from Friday’s semiconductor-led drawdown, the stronger May payrolls report, the front-end yield backup and the renewed focus on equity supply ahead of the SpaceX IPO. Geopolitics are less disruptive this morning, with Israel appearing to heed Trump’s call for restraint and Trump suggesting the US is close to a “strong, powerful” Iran deal, but the lack of specifics and the delayed timing keep Middle East risk from fully clearing. For thematic ETF positioning, the setup argues for a selective rebound posture: re-engage semiconductors, AI infrastructure and software only where flows and price action confirm stabilization, while staying cautious on clean energy, REITs, small caps, metals and speculative themes until CPI, PPI, Treasury supply and June consumer-sentiment data provide cleaner macro confirmation.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show a sharp high-beta rebound in blockchain and semiconductors. CRPT led the 1D tape with an 8.34% gain, followed by WGMI up 6.75%, DAPP up 6.56%, BKCH up 6.55% and BITQ up 6.39%. Semiconductors were also strong just below the top five, with SOXX up 5.87%, FTXL up 5.62%, SOXQ up 5.46%, PSI up 5.01% and SMH up 4.82%, suggesting investors are willing to buy the AI hardware dip even after last week’s forced unwind. The weakness is concentrated in rate-sensitive and defensive/quality sleeves rather than the center of the AI trade: ICF fell 1.55%, XLRE declined 1.50%, ICLN lost 1.50%, ZAP fell 1.50% and IYR dropped 1.42%. Flows remain supportive of broad equity beta and quality growth, with SPY attracting $15.82B over 1M, QQQ $7.51B, VTI $5.10B, SCHD $2.95B and VTV $1.90B. However, the outflow table still shows active trimming of international value, gold, small caps, momentum and robotics/AI, with EFV losing $4.42B over 1M, GLD losing $1.94B, IWM losing $1.46B, MTUM losing $794.62M and BAI losing $407.18M.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to treat the rebound as a tradable stabilization attempt, not a full reset of risk. Semiconductors are already showing dip-buying demand after Friday’s washout, with SOXX up 5.87% on the day and supported by $1.81B of 1M inflows and $4.19B YTD, while SMH is up 4.82% and still has $4.07B of YTD inflows. Software is less dynamic today but remains strategically important, with IGV supported by $7.15B of YTD inflows and a positive 4.94% 1M return. Blockchain’s daily rebound is strong, but weak 1W returns and uneven 1M returns argue for tactical sizing rather than core allocation. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, memory, quality software and cybersecurity, while keeping blockchain tactical and remaining underweight flow-negative metals, small caps, REITs, clean energy and broad momentum until CPI/PPI, Treasury auctions and the SpaceX IPO supply event are absorbed.
