A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Weekly Performance Summary: September 4th, 2026

COMMENTARY:

The S&P 500 gained 0.09% for the week ending September 4, as thematic equities were driven by a tug-of-war between renewed enthusiasm for artificial intelligence and digital assets and rising interest-rate concerns. A stronger-than-expected August employment report showed 162,000 jobs added versus expectations of roughly 55,000, pushing Treasury yields higher and reducing expectations for near-term Fed easing. Earlier in the week, however, comments from Fed Governor Christopher Waller suggesting rates could remain unchanged if inflation continues to moderate helped ignite a sharp rally in technology and cryptocurrency-related stocks.

Digital Assets & Blockchain was the week’s strongest thematic area. The blockchain theme surged 11.13%, outperforming the S&P 500 by more than 11 percentage points, while cryptocurrency exposure gained 2.87% and financial-technology exposure rose 2.17%. Bitcoin briefly climbed above $81,000 as expectations for a Fed pause improved, lifting major holdings including Strategy, Coinbase, Robinhood, Riot Platforms and MARA Holdings. Strategy gained roughly 17.6%, Coinbase 10.1% and Robinhood 16.6% on Friday. The move reflected renewed institutional interest in digital assets as well as optimism surrounding potential U.S. cryptocurrency legislation.

Semiconductors & Artificial Intelligence also performed well, gaining 2.51%, or 2.42 percentage points above the S&P 500. Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD, Micron and Marvell Technology were among the important contributors across semiconductor and AI-focused strategies. Nvidia received additional attention after announcing its approximately $13 billion acquisition of Hugging Face, reinforcing its effort to expand its position across the broader AI ecosystem. Broadcom, meanwhile, reported strong quarterly revenue and highlighted continued demand for custom AI accelerators and networking products.

Infrastructure, Electrification & Innovation remained mixed but generally resilient. Themes tied to data centers, electrical grids, industrial automation, transportation and clean energy benefited from continued investment in AI infrastructure. GE Vernova, Eaton, Quanta Services, Caterpillar, Tesla, First Solar and NextEra Energy were among notable holdings across these strategies, while autonomous-driving and robotics exposure remained focused on longer-term adoption trends. Within healthcare innovation, biotechnology exposure was more selective, with investors balancing advances in AI-enabled drug discovery against higher-rate pressures.

Resources & Cybersecurity represented the weaker side of thematic performance. Copper miners declined 3.98%, while cybersecurity fell 4.03%, making cybersecurity the weakest of the highlighted themes and 4.12 percentage points below the S&P 500. Freeport-McMoRan and Southern Copper were important copper holdings, while CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks and Fortinet represented major cybersecurity exposures. Stronger Treasury yields weighed on both resource-sensitive and growth-oriented themes, while cybersecurity stocks faced profit-taking following strong prior performance.

Overall, thematic markets remained highly sensitive to interest rates, AI spending and cryptocurrency momentum. The week demonstrated how quickly leadership can rotate between high-growth themes and more defensive or resource-oriented exposures. For investors, the key takeaway remains that macroeconomic policy and innovation-driven catalysts continue to create significant dispersion across thematic strategies.
