A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Weekly Performance Summary: June 26th, 2026

COMMENTARY:

The S&P 500 declined 1.95% for the week ending June 26, 2026, as investors rotated away from higher-growth areas following a strong run earlier in the year. Within the thematic equity space, performance varied widely as defensive and value-oriented themes outperformed while economically sensitive and momentum-driven strategies came under pressure. Easing geopolitical tensions, moderating interest rate expectations, and concerns over slowing global industrial activity all influenced investor positioning, leading to sharp differences across investment themes.

Health Care Innovation – Biotech was the week’s strongest-performing investment theme, advancing 10.4%. The sector benefited from renewed investor appetite for companies with attractive clinical pipelines and improving acquisition prospects following several weeks of underperformance. Positive trial updates and increased merger-and-acquisition speculation lifted sentiment across the industry. Among the largest contributors were Sarepta Therapeutics, Viking Therapeutics, Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Moderna, and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, as investors selectively returned to higher-growth biotechnology companies with promising product development opportunities.

Housing & Infrastructure – Home Construction rebounded sharply, gaining 5.7% after a challenging stretch. Investors looked beyond recent housing market softness as lower Treasury yields improved affordability expectations and supported homebuilder valuations. Optimism surrounding future demand, resilient household formation, and improving confidence in the housing market helped drive the recovery. Builders including D.R. Horton, Lennar, PulteGroup, NVR, and Toll Brothers led the advance, while suppliers of building products also contributed positively to the theme’s performance.

Energy Infrastructure rounded out the top-performing themes, rising 4.0% as investors favored companies with stable cash flows and attractive dividend yields. Midstream operators continued to benefit from healthy North American production volumes and resilient demand for pipeline and storage services despite modest commodity price fluctuations. Energy Transfer, Enterprise Products Partners, Williams Companies, Kinder Morgan, and ONEOK were among the strongest contributors, reinforcing the sector’s reputation as a defensive area within the broader energy market.

Industrial Metals – Copper Miners posted the weakest return of the week, falling 10.9%. Copper prices declined as investors grew increasingly concerned about slowing manufacturing activity in China and weaker global demand expectations. Mining companies including Freeport-McMoRan, Southern Copper, Lundin Mining, First Quantum Minerals, and Antofagasta accounted for much of the downside as lower metal prices pressured earnings expectations across the industry.

Digital Assets – Bitcoin Ecosystem also struggled, declining 9.5% as profit-taking followed a strong rally earlier in the year. Weakness in the price of Bitcoin weighed on cryptocurrency miners and blockchain-related companies, while investors reduced exposure to higher-volatility assets amid broader market uncertainty. MARA Holdings, Riot Platforms, CleanSpark, Core Scientific, and Cipher Mining were among the largest detractors during the week.

Overall, the week’s trading reflected a rotation toward defensive growth and income-oriented themes while economically sensitive and higher-volatility investments faced renewed selling pressure. Investors will remain focused on economic data, corporate earnings, and central bank policy for guidance as markets enter the second half of the year.
