A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Weekly Performance Summary: July17th, 2026

COMMENTARY:

The S&P 500 declined 1.55% for the week ending July 17, 2026, as investors rotated out of higher-growth areas following a strong first half of the year. Sticky inflation data and renewed uncertainty surrounding the timing of future Federal Reserve rate cuts pressured many growth-oriented sectors, while earnings season prompted investors to reassess valuations across thematic investments. Despite the broader market weakness, several themes tied to energy, select international markets, and cybersecurity demonstrated resilience as investors favored areas supported by improving fundamentals and long-term secular trends.

Energy Infrastructure was the strongest-performing investment theme, gaining 2.3% as higher crude oil and natural gas prices improved sentiment across the midstream sector. Pipeline operators and energy infrastructure companies benefited from expectations for steady cash flows, growing export demand, and resilient capital spending throughout North America. Targa Resources, Kinder Morgan, Williams Companies, MPLX, and Enterprise Products Partners were among the largest contributors, with investors continuing to favor businesses that combine stable fee-based revenues with attractive dividend growth and strong balance sheets.

China Internet rebounded 1.6%, recovering from recent weakness as investors welcomed signs of improving consumer activity and continued policy support from Chinese authorities. Easing regulatory concerns and optimism surrounding artificial intelligence initiatives also boosted sentiment. Leading internet platforms, including Alibaba, Tencent Holdings, PDD Holdings, JD.com, and Trip.com, accounted for much of the advance as investors selectively returned to high-quality companies with improving earnings expectations and attractive valuations relative to global peers.

Cybersecurity finished the week modestly higher, advancing 0.5%, as demand for digital security solutions remained a priority for both corporations and governments. Ongoing investment in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data protection supported the industry’s long-term outlook despite broader technology weakness. Strong contributions came from CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, CyberArk, and Cisco Systems, reflecting continued confidence that cybersecurity spending remains one of the most resilient areas of enterprise technology budgets.

The weakest-performing themes were Blockchain and Uranium Innovation, which declined 10.6% and 9.9%, respectively. Blockchain-related companies tracked a sharp pullback in cryptocurrencies as profit-taking weighed heavily on digital assets, with Coinbase, MARA Holdings, Riot Platforms, CleanSpark, and Core Scientific among the largest detractors. Uranium equities also retreated after a strong multi-month rally, as investors locked in gains amid lower spot uranium prices. The decline was led by Cameco, NexGen Energy, Denison Mines, Uranium Energy Corp., and Kazatomprom, although the long-term outlook for nuclear power demand remains supported by growing global electricity needs and continued investment in clean energy.

This week’s performance highlighted how quickly leadership can rotate across thematic investments as macroeconomic developments, earnings expectations, and investor sentiment evolve. While volatility returned to many higher-growth themes, areas supported by durable cash flows and long-term structural demand continued to demonstrate resilience, reinforcing the value of maintaining a diversified investment approach.
