Weekly Performance Summary: August 14th, 2026

COMMENTARY:

The S&P 500 Index gained 0.36% for the week ended August 14, 2026, with thematic equities showing far wider dispersion than the broad market. Investors favored growth areas supported by enterprise technology spending and energy-related cash flows, while risk appetite weakened in cryptocurrency and China-focused internet shares. Earnings results, changing expectations for interest rates, and ongoing scrutiny of the global growth outlook remained key influences on thematic allocations.

Cloud computing was the strongest highlighted theme, rising 5.87%, outperforming the S&P 500 by 5.51%. Large software-as-a-service providers, cloud-platform operators, data-center businesses, cybersecurity companies, and semiconductor suppliers were meaningful contributors. Investor interest remained centered on artificial-intelligence workloads, continued enterprise migration to the cloud, and elevated demand for computing capacity. Results and outlooks from major technology companies reinforced the view that AI-related infrastructure spending remains a powerful, though increasingly selective, market driver.

Energy infrastructure advanced 3.59%, Pipeline operators, gathering-and-processing companies, and midstream infrastructure providers contributed as higher energy prices and durable U.S. production volumes supported confidence in fee-based cash flows. The group’s relatively attractive income characteristics also appealed to investors amid ongoing uncertainty around rate policy. Continued focus on export capacity for liquefied natural gas and the expansion of North American energy infrastructure remained supportive industry themes.

Leisure and entertainment increased 2.18%. Casino operators, hotel companies, cruise lines, restaurant businesses, and entertainment venues generally aided returns as investors weighed resilient travel demand and seasonal consumer activity against more selective discretionary spending. Company-specific earnings, booking trends, and management commentary on pricing and demand remained especially important across this economically sensitive theme.

Digital assets declined 3.22%, underperforming the S&P 500 by 3.5%. The decline tracked weakness in Bitcoin and reflected shifting risk sentiment, profit-taking after prior gains, and sensitivity to changes in interest-rate expectations. Bitcoin-mining companies and digital-asset infrastructure businesses also faced pressure as investors reassessed cryptocurrency prices, network economics, and regulation.

China internet and consumer-platform companies fell 5.76%, ended up the weakest highlighted theme. E-commerce platforms, internet-search companies, online gaming businesses, and food-delivery providers weighed on performance amid continued concerns about China’s consumer recovery, property-market strains, competitive pricing, and the policy environment. The group also remained vulnerable to broader concerns over Chinese growth and U.S.-China trade relations.

This week’s thematic market favored AI-enabled cloud infrastructure, income-oriented energy assets, and travel-related businesses, while speculative digital assets and China-exposed growth companies lagged. Investors will continue to watch earnings, economic data, monetary-policy expectations, and geopolitical developments for signals on leadership in the weeks ahead.
