Theme Signal
Software, housing, travel, energy services and REITs led the latest theme tape, while blockchain, semiconductors, robotics/AI and clean energy lagged despite Monday’s broader market bounce attempt.
Investment Digest
The thematic backdrop is improving at the index level but remains fragile beneath the surface. Futures are higher as oil and yields move lower, with investors leaning into a pause in Middle East hostilities and some traction behind Omani-led diplomacy. That is helping risk appetite after back-to-back weekly losses for the S&P 500 and another difficult week for Mag 7, software and AI-linked momentum. However, the AI narrative remains two-sided: reports of a potential NVIDIA backstop for OpenAI’s massive data center lease support the compute-demand story, but also reinforce circularity, financing and AI-debt concerns. Memory remains an important fault line as China’s CXMT IPO surge, Apple’s lobbying to use Chinese memory chips and Micron’s pushback keep supply-chain and pricing risk in focus. For thematic ETF investors, the tape is trying to rotate back toward software, housing, travel, REITs and selective cyclicals, while the AI hardware sleeve remains flow-supported but technically damaged.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show leadership in software, housing, travel and REITs. WCLD rose 3.05%, ITB gained 2.70%, JETS added 2.66%, CLOU rose 2.44% and OIH gained 2.27%. REITs also screened well, with XLRE up 2.22%, IYR up 2.19%, USRT up 2.18% and VNQ up 2.15%, consistent with lower yields and a broader rotation away from crowded AI hardware. The weakest areas were blockchain, semiconductors and robotics/AI: WGMI fell 8.03%, XSD lost 5.55%, BKCH declined 5.48%, PSI fell 5.48% and BAI dropped 5.25%. Flows remain a major divergence point. SOXX attracted $4.76B over 1M and $11.10B YTD despite a -12.38% 1M return, while SMH attracted $2.27B over 1M and $7.09B YTD despite a -9.33% 1M return. That suggests investors are still adding to AI hardware, but price action has not yet confirmed a durable turn.
Bottom Line
The tactical takeaway is to participate in the bounce, but favor rotation over pure momentum. Software, REITs, housing and travel are showing better short-term price action, while semiconductors remain the most important but most conflicted sleeve. SOXX and SMH still have strong sponsorship, with combined YTD inflows of $18.19B, but both remain sharply negative over 1M and down on the day. QQQ’s $(9.77B) of 1M outflows reinforces that investors are reducing broad growth beta even as they continue to fund targeted AI hardware exposure. The preferred posture is overweight selective software, REITs, housing/travel beneficiaries, energy services, dividend/value ballast and carefully sized semiconductor exposure, while underweighting blockchain, robotics/AI beta, clean energy, broad small caps and flow-negative metals until Big Tech earnings and Wednesday’s FOMC decision give the market a cleaner signal.
