A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Natural Resources, carbon, energy and uranium led the latest theme tape, while software, fintech and biotech lagged as higher oil, higher yields and Mag 7 earnings pressure kept investors cautious.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is still caught between a tentative AI infrastructure rebound and a more defensive macro tape. Wednesday’s market saw momentum extend Tuesday’s bounce, with semis, memory, servers and other AI infrastructure names outperforming, helped by upbeat AI headlines including an Anthropic/AMD deal and OpenAI’s higher compute-spending outlook. However, the broader market finished lower as software weakened, Mag 7 earnings reactions disappointed, oil rose, yields backed up and the market priced roughly 40 bp of hikes through year-end. This morning’s setup is less supportive, with S&P futures lower, gold and silver down, WTI higher and investors digesting GOOGL’s higher capex guide, TSLA margin pressure and still-elevated Middle East risk. The near-term signal is not a full risk-off move, but it is a reminder that AI hardware leadership now needs earnings confirmation, while higher oil favors energy and real-asset themes.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show Natural Resources and energy-linked exposures leading. GDX rose 3.36%, KRBN gained 3.23%, SILJ advanced 2.95%, FCG added 2.70% and KOPX rose 2.24%. Uranium also participated, with NLR up 2.12%, while broader resource exposure through NANR and GUNR gained 1.98% and 1.88%, respectively. The weakest areas were concentrated in software, fintech and biotech: LABU fell 4.64%, WCLD lost 4.33%, XSW declined 4.00%, IGV dropped 3.05% and CLOU fell 3.01%. Flows continue to show a sharp split between price leadership and investor sponsorship: SOXX attracted $5.72B over 1M and $11.78B YTD despite a -15.19% 1M return, while QQQ saw $(5.28B) of 1M outflows and SMH remains positive on flows but still down -12.26% over 1M.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to keep selective AI hardware exposure, but pair it with energy, Natural Resources and dividend/value ballast while oil and rates remain active headwinds. SOXX remains flow-confirmed, with $5.72B of 1M inflows and $11.78B YTD, but its -15.19% 1M return shows investors are still buying into technical damage rather than confirmed leadership. Software is the weaker sleeve for now, with IGV down 3.05% on the day and $(920.44M) of 1M outflows. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, energy, Natural Resources, uranium and dividend/value ballast, while underweighting software, high-volatility biotech, broad growth beta and small caps until Big Tech earnings, oil risk and the July Fed setup provide a cleaner risk signal.
