A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Semiconductors, China innovation, blockchain and metals/miners led the latest theme tape, while cannabis, energy producers and MLPs lagged as momentum cooled into next week’s CPI/PPI and bank earnings catalysts.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop remains constructive but selective heading into a heavy macro and earnings week. Thursday’s tape was led by momentum, semiconductors and memory, with broader participation from cyclicals, small caps, financials, transports and homebuilders, while oil eased and yields moved slightly lower after a recent backup. The market is still leaning into the AI capex story, helped by Meta compute-capacity headlines, Micron’s higher long-term US investment plans, Applied Materials’ positive semi-cycle commentary and the heavily oversubscribed SK Hynix US listing. However, the risk budget is not unlimited: the SOX remains well below its June high, oil/geopolitical risk has not fully disappeared, and next week’s CPI, PPI, retail sales, Warsh testimony and bank earnings will test whether risk appetite can broaden beyond semiconductors.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show semiconductors and AI-adjacent growth back in leadership, with PSI up 5.38%, CNXT up 4.79%, XSD up 3.80%, FTXL up 3.68% and SOXX up 3.50%. Metals/miners also participated, with SILJ up 4.54%, KOPX up 3.23% and GDX up 3.06%, though the flow profile for metals remains weak. The bottom of the tape was concentrated in cannabis and energy-linked income, with CNBS down 3.06%, MSOS down 3.04%, FCG down 2.07%, XOP down 1.56% and AMZA down 1.03%. Flows still strongly favor semiconductor exposure: SOXX attracted $6.39B over 1M and $12.24B YTD, while SMH attracted $3.31B over 1M and $8.31B YTD. Broad beta remains mixed, with QQQ seeing $4.59B of 1M inflows, while SPY saw $(4.66B) of 1M outflows.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay overweight semiconductors and AI infrastructure, but keep the trade disciplined into next week’s inflation data and bank earnings. SOXX and SMH remain the clearest flow-confirmed AI hardware sleeves, with combined 1M inflows of $9.70B and combined YTD inflows of $20.54B. That said, leadership is no longer purely one-way momentum: metals/miners are bouncing, blockchain is improving tactically, and broad beta flows are mixed. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, cybersecurity, quality software and dividend/value ballast, while underweighting cannabis, energy producers, flow-negative metals and China internet until CPI, PPI, Warsh testimony and early Q2 earnings confirm whether the rally can broaden.
