Theme Signal
Blockchain, China internet, energy services and AI infrastructure led the latest theme tape, while hydrogen, housing, travel and metals lagged as investors rotated around oil/rate stabilization and renewed semiconductor volatility.
Investment Digest
The thematic backdrop is stabilizing after Wednesday’s geopolitical risk-off move, with futures slightly higher as oil and rates pause following another backup in yields and a sharp crude rally. The latest market update shows semis and memory rebounded Wednesday even as the broader market finished mostly lower, while energy, tech hardware, AI infrastructure, China tech and select communications outperformed and cyclicals came under pressure from higher oil and rates. The market is now leaning toward an “escalate-to-deescalate” interpretation of the latest US-Iran flare-up after Trump said Iran wants a deal, but short positioning in oil and continued Strait of Hormuz control rhetoric remain near-term risks. For thematic investors, the key signal is that AI hardware is no longer the only leadership channel: semiconductor flows remain very strong, but daily leadership is rotating through blockchain, China internet, energy services and AI infrastructure, while software and housing are still losing sponsorship.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show a rebound in higher-beta and geopolitically sensitive sleeves. WGMI led with a 4.75% daily gain, followed by KWEB up 3.53%, OIH up 3.15%, TCAI up 3.01% and XOP up 2.94%. The move in OIH and XOP fits the renewed oil-risk backdrop, while TCAI’s gain suggests investors are still willing to buy AI infrastructure selectively even as the broader semiconductor group remains volatile. The weakest areas were hydrogen, housing, travel and metals, with HYDR down 4.55%, ITB down 3.97%, AWAY down 3.60%, SILJ down 3.40% and XHB down 3.08%. Flows remain heavily supportive of semiconductors, with SOXX taking in $8.47B over 1M and SMH taking in $3.56B. However, software continues to show pressure, with IGV seeing $(1.10B) of 1M outflows, while gold and silver remain flow-negative despite intermittent geopolitical bids.
Bottom Line
The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive on AI infrastructure and semiconductors, but keep the allocation selective and pair it with energy infrastructure and dividend/value ballast while oil and rates remain active risks. SOXX and SMH are still the clearest flow-confirmed AI hardware sleeves, with combined 1M inflows of $12.03B and combined YTD inflows of $20.28B, but both have negative 1M returns, showing that capital is still arriving into a volatile drawdown rather than a clean trend. KWEB’s daily rebound looks tactical because the fund still has $(770.75M) of 1M outflows, while WGMI’s strength comes against weak 1W and 1M returns. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, energy infrastructure, cybersecurity and dividend/value ballast, while underweighting housing, hydrogen, travel, flow-negative metals and broad momentum until oil, rates and early Q2 earnings catalysts settle.
