A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Biotechnology and Natural Resources led the latest theme tape, while semiconductors, blockchain and AI infrastructure lag; however, the Monday setup points to a tactical momentum bounce in semis and memory after the recent drawdown.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is stabilizing after a holiday-shortened week defined by a sharp rotation away from crowded AI hardware and into healthcare, software, financials, staples and other defensive/broadening-out pockets. Thursday’s market recap showed equal-weight leadership, a fresh high for RSP, and a softer NFP report that eased front-end yields but did not fully derail the solid macro narrative. The Monday premarket setup is more constructive, with futures higher and semis/memory bouncing after recent weakness, though the move looks more like a tactical reset than a clean return to one-way momentum leadership. Investors are still debating AI infrastructure concentration, META cloud-capacity concerns, AAPL memory-supplier headlines, potential supply-chain pressure, and timing issues around next-generation AI racks. Lower oil, Strait of Hormuz reopening traction, and a quieter macro calendar help risk appetite, but ISM services, FOMC minutes, Treasury supply and early Q2 earnings positioning remain important filters.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show biotechnology leading decisively, with LABU up 7.54%, IDNA up 3.87%, BBH up 3.37%, IBB up 2.93% and XBI up 2.50%. Natural Resources also bounced, with GDX up 4.48%, SILJ up 3.16%, SLV up 2.69% and GLD up 2.03%, although flow data still show persistent redemptions from metals. The weakest areas were concentrated in the recently crowded AI and crypto-linked sleeves: WGMI fell 9.49%, PSI lost 9.40%, CNXT declined 6.85%, XSD dropped 6.74% and FTXL fell 6.17%. Flows remain supportive of broad beta and select semiconductor exposure despite the price weakness, with 1M inflows led by SPY at $10.59B, QQQ at $8.83B, VTI at $6.38B, SOXX at $3.47B and SCHD at $3.16B. The largest 1M outflows were GLD at $(3.53B), EFV at $(2.80B), IWM at $(2.47B), IGV at $(2.29B) and BAI at $(942.50M).

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to use the Monday semiconductor bounce selectively rather than chase it broadly. SOXX still has meaningful sponsorship with $3.47B of 1M inflows and $6.21B YTD, but its 5.57% daily loss and 6.35% 1M decline show that the AI hardware sleeve remains vulnerable to mechanical selling and earnings-expectation risk. Biotech has the strongest realized momentum, though LABU’s 91.86% 1M gain makes it tactical rather than core. Natural Resources are bouncing, but GLD and SLV still combine weak 1M performance with heavy YTD outflows. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, quality software, healthcare innovation and dividend/value ballast, while staying underweight blockchain, flow-negative metals, broad small-cap beta and crowded momentum until ISM services, FOMC minutes and early earnings-season positioning clear.
