A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Space, hydrogen, semiconductors, biotech and cybersecurity are leading as big tech rebounds, while blockchain and gold-linked Natural Resources lag.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is stabilizing after Monday’s big-tech-led rebound, though the market remains split between a renewed AI/growth bounce and lingering pressure on crowded semiconductor, memory and momentum trades. The latest trading updates show the S&P 500 recovering after five straight declines, helped by GOOGL, AMZN, TSLA, software and semis, while breadth was still uneven and rate sensitivity remains important ahead of Warsh’s Sintra speech, ISM manufacturing, ADP and Thursday’s payrolls report. The broader narrative is still supportive but not clean: US-Iran talks have moved geopolitics to the background, oil remains contained, and Q2 earnings expectations remain strong, but investors are watching quarter-end flows, leveraged ETF concentration, memory-cost spillovers, yen weakness, Fed reaction-function uncertainty and signs that AI infrastructure demand is creating both earnings upside and inflationary pressure.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show a sharp rebound in higher-beta growth and AI-adjacent themes. UFO led the 1D tape with a 6.62% gain, followed by HYDR up 5.88%, PSI up 5.83%, LABU up 5.62% and SIXG up 4.26%. Software and cybersecurity also improved, with BUG up 4.19%, HACK up 3.93%, IHAK up 3.70% and CIBR up 3.68%. The weakest themes were blockchain and Natural Resources, with WGMI down 3.09%, STCE down 2.22%, BKCH down 1.91%, GDX down 1.71% and GLD down 1.35%. Flows remain supportive of broad beta and semiconductors, with VTI attracting $7.02B over 1M, SOXX $3.85B, SCHD $2.88B, AGG $2.50B and VTV $2.07B. Outflows remain concentrated in EFV at $(5.55B), GLD at $(3.21B), IWM at $(1.55B), BAI at $(1.30B) and IGV at $(1.18B).

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive but selective. Semiconductors are still the best flow-confirmed AI sleeve, with SOXX up 4.14% on the day, up 8.00% over 1M, and supported by $3.85B of 1M inflows and $7.50B YTD. However, the rebound is broader than semis, with space, hydrogen, biotech and cybersecurity all participating after recent weakness. Software is improving tactically but still has weak 1M performance and 1M outflows in IGV, while blockchain and Natural Resources remain clear laggards. The preferred posture is overweight semiconductors, selective AI infrastructure, cybersecurity, tactical biotech and quality growth, while staying underweight blockchain, flow-negative metals, China internet and broad small-cap beta until quarter-end flows, Warsh commentary and payrolls clear.
