A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Biotechnology, semiconductors and AI-adjacent China innovation are leading, while cannabis, space, internet/metaverse and software lag as the global AI/memory trade resets.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is more defensive after Monday’s mixed tape gave way to a global risk-off move in Tuesday premarket trading, with memory, semiconductors and momentum under outsized pressure despite no clear break in the AI compute/capex demand narrative. The latest trading updates point to concentration risk, leveraged ETF exposure, open-source AI model competition, token-cost scrutiny and a potentially more volatile Fed regime as the main pressure points, while geopolitics has moved to the background as investors continue to treat US-Iran progress as durable enough to keep oil contained. Monday’s data still showed memory and semiconductors as leaders, but Tuesday’s futures setup argues for a more cautious read: investors should keep strategic exposure to AI hardware and infrastructure, but reduce the most extended momentum beta until the memory unwind stabilizes.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show biotech and semiconductors still screening well, with LABU up 11.19%, SBIO up 6.44%, XBI up 3.75%, PSI up 3.50% and CNXT up 2.79%. Semiconductor breadth remains constructive beneath the headline volatility, with SOXX up 2.43% on the day and 21.96% over 1M, FTXL up 2.71% and 19.81%, and SMH up 1.37% and 16.07%. The weakest themes were concentrated in cannabis, space and internet/metaverse: MSOS fell 6.21%, CNBS lost 5.99%, MJ declined 3.65%, ARKX fell 3.47% and UFO dropped 3.08%. Flows still favor broad beta and semiconductor exposure, with VTI taking in $7.21B over 1M, IWM $3.56B, VTV $3.55B, SCHD $2.91B and SOXX $2.64B. However, outflows from EFV at $(5.60B), GLD at $(1.76B), MTUM at $(1.33B), KWEB at $(993.88M) and ITA at $(435.72M) show investors are still reducing international value, gold, momentum, China internet and defense exposure.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay invested in AI infrastructure and semiconductor leadership, but actively manage position size after the global memory/momentum reversal. SOXX remains flow-confirmed with $2.64B of 1M inflows, $6.06B YTD inflows and a 21.96% 1M return, while SMH still has $5.84B YTD inflows and a 16.07% 1M return. Biotech is showing the strongest daily momentum, but LABU’s leveraged structure makes that sleeve tactical rather than core. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, quality software and healthcare innovation, while underweighting cannabis, space, China internet, flow-negative metals and broad momentum until the AI/memory unwind, Fed-rate risk and bond-volatility backdrop settle.
