A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Semiconductors, robotics/AI, clean energy and blockchain are leading, while legacy energy, Natural Resources and aerospace/defense lag as the market refocuses on AI demand and lower oil.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop remains constructive but increasingly narrow as the market starts the week digesting a strong semi/memory-led rally, lower crude, progress in US-Iran talks and a still-hawkish Fed backdrop. The latest trading updates show AI demand back at the center of the tape, with semiconductors and memory continuing to outperform even as energy falls on the improving Strait of Hormuz outlook and WTI extends its decline. Lower oil helps the inflation and consumer-affordability narrative, but front-end yields are still firmer and the market is pricing roughly 40 bp of Fed hikes this year, keeping pressure on the most rate-sensitive and speculative parts of the thematic universe. The key tactical issue is whether AI leadership can broaden into software, power, grid and industrial beneficiaries, or whether the rally remains concentrated in semiconductors and memory.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show semiconductors fully back in leadership, with XSD up 7.26%, FTXL up 6.79%, SOXX up 6.62%, PSI up 6.42% and SOXQ up 6.27%. SMH also gained 5.76% and is now up 20.82% over 1M, with $8.61B of 1M inflows and $13.03B YTD, making it the clearest flow-confirmed AI hardware sleeve. Robotics/AI also screened well, with BAI up 5.62% and ARTY up 4.25%, while clean energy improved through QCLN up 5.26%. The weakest themes were oil services, Natural Resources and defense: OIH fell 2.93%, SILJ lost 2.34%, GDX declined 2.19%, SLV fell 1.81% and NANR dropped 1.77%. Flows remain heavily supportive of AI hardware and broad beta, with SMH, VTI, SCHD, VTV and SOXX leading 1M inflows, while SPY, EFV, GLD, KWEB and ARKK saw the largest 1M outflows.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay overweight AI hardware and semiconductors, but avoid chasing the rally through weaker commodity and energy-linked exposures. SMH and SOXX are both performance- and flow-confirmed, with combined 1M inflows of more than $12.91B and 1M returns of 20.82% and 29.01%, respectively. Software remains a strategic sleeve, but today’s leadership is clearly in semiconductors, memory, robotics/AI and adjacent infrastructure. The preferred posture is overweight semiconductors, AI infrastructure, robotics/AI, quality software and selective clean energy/grid beneficiaries, while underweighting energy services, broad Natural Resources, China internet, gold/silver-linked funds and broad small-cap beta until oil, Fed expectations and post-Iran deal implementation become clearer.
