A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Biotechnology and semiconductors are leading as investors rotate back toward AI hardware and healthcare beta, while cannabis, space, blockchain, software and uranium-linked themes lag.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is more defensive after the S&P 500 snapped a nine-day winning streak and futures point lower, with Nasdaq futures under the most pressure as investors digest earnings that were broadly solid but failed to clear very high expectations. The latest trading updates show the main overhangs clustered around a higher bar after the market’s eight-week advance, renewed scrutiny of AI token economics, softer post-earnings reactions in AVGO and CRWD, and a more cautious read on software despite the longer-term AI demand narrative remaining intact. AVGO reiterated the insatiable AI demand story, but investors focused on the high bar, weaker Q3 AI semi revenue guide and lack of a FY27 raise, while CRWD and VEEV also struggled against elevated expectations. Macro is not providing a full offset: Middle East headlines are somewhat better after the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire and reports Trump is hesitant to restart military activity in Iran, but oil is only modestly lower after a three-day rally, sequencing around a broader framework agreement remains unresolved, and Fed commentary continues to skew hawkish with Logan the latest to flag the possibility of a rate hike this year. The near-term read-through for thematic ETFs is to stay invested in AI infrastructure and semiconductors, but reduce exposure to crowded software, speculative crypto/blockchain, cannabis and other high-beta sleeves until earnings reactions, payrolls and rates provide cleaner confirmation.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show biotechnology and semiconductors as the strongest pockets of relative performance. LABU led the 1D tape with a 4.61% gain, followed by FBT up 2.92%, BBH up 2.22%, FTXL up 2.21% and PBE up 2.04%. Semiconductors remain one of the most durable one-month leadership groups, with SOXX up 32.19% over 1M, SOXQ up 31.47%, XSD up 30.35%, FTXL up 29.41% and SMH up 25.12%, even though sentiment around AI hardware is being tested by the AVGO reaction. The weakest themes were more clearly risk-off: MSOS fell 6.14%, YOLO lost 5.83%, UFO declined 5.68%, SILJ fell 5.24% and CRPT dropped 5.06%. Software also pulled back sharply after a big run, with WCLD down 4.86% and IGV down 4.33%, though IGV remains up 15.66% over 1M and still has strong flow support. Fund flows show investors are not abandoning growth, but they are being more selective. SPY attracted $7.20B over 1M, VTI $5.26B, QQQ $4.07B, SCHD $2.95B and IGV $2.46B, while the largest 1M outflows were concentrated in EFV at $(2.93B), GLD at $(1.20B), MTUM at $(498.91M), ITA at $(439.98M) and GDX at $(381.57M).

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive on AI infrastructure and semiconductors, but reduce exposure to the speculative and recently crowded sleeves that are failing to hold up in a more defensive tape. Semiconductors remain the best strategic theme because 1M returns remain powerful across SOXX, SOXQ, XSD, FTXL and SMH, while SMH still has $5.52B of YTD inflows and SOXX has $3.89B. Software should remain a core allocation, but the 4.33% daily decline in IGV after a 15.66% 1M gain argues for trimming the most extended cloud/cybersecurity winners rather than abandoning the theme. Biotechnology is showing the best daily bounce, but LABU’s negative 1M return makes it more tactical than strategic. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, memory, quality software, cybersecurity and healthcare innovation, while underweighting cannabis, blockchain, space after the recent run, flow-negative Natural Resources and broad small-cap beta until payrolls, rates and earnings reactions stabilize.
