A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Hydrogen, space, semiconductors and disruptive technology are leading as oil and yields fall, while blockchain, cannabis, China internet, biotech and metals lag.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is cautiously constructive after the S&P 500 posted its eighth straight weekly gain, its longest winning streak since 2023, while futures are firmer on the favorable combination of lower oil, lower yields and renewed Middle East diplomatic optimism. The latest trading updates show investors focusing more on reports of progress toward an Iran framework agreement and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz than on the latest kinetic flare-up involving US and Israeli strikes on Iranian vessels and launch sites. That risk-on impulse is helped by a Treasury rally and a sharp crude pullback, both of which ease the recent pressure from inflation, affordability and the negative equity-rate correlation. Still, the market is not fully clean: sovereign yield pressure increasingly looks structural, macro short positioning is elevated, AI/momentum positioning remains crowded, and nuclear issues remain a key sticking point in US-Iran talks. AI compute and infrastructure demand remains the central equity theme, with semis and memory continuing to outperform, but the latest setup also points to broadening into space, hydrogen, quantum, clean energy, off-price retail, homebuilders and banks. The tactical challenge is to participate in renewed risk appetite without ignoring that the rally has already come a long way and is still sensitive to rates, oil, PCE inflation, consumer confidence and this week’s housing and durable-goods data.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show a clear risk-on rebound, but leadership is more diversified than a pure semiconductor tape. HYDR led the 1D leaderboard with a 5.32% gain and remains up 38.64% over 1M, while space exposure also screened strongly with UFO up 4.99% and ROKT up 4.21%. Semiconductors remain central to the AI trade, with XSD up 4.75% on the day and 37.00% over 1M, while FTXL gained 2.72% and is up 27.10% over 1M, SOXX rose 2.41% and is up 24.45%, and SMH gained 1.49% with a 20.86% 1M return. Disruptive technology also participated, with SIXG up 3.52% and QTUM up 2.75%. The weaker side of the tape shows pressure in speculative and commodity-sensitive exposures: CRPT fell 3.27%, CNBS declined 3.15%, MJ lost 2.80%, KWEB dropped 2.61% and LABU fell 2.47%. Flow trends continue to favor broad beta, dividends, momentum and technology infrastructure rather than the weakest high-beta sleeves. VTI attracted $5.13B over 1M, QQQ took in $4.57B, SPY added $4.21B, SCHD took in $2.44B and VUG added $1.95B. The largest 1M outflows remain concentrated in IWM at $(2.79B), GLD at $(2.32B), GDX at $(580.97M), ARKK at $(389.00M) and USMV at $(329.53M), reinforcing that investors are still reducing small caps, gold-linked exposures, disruptive-growth laggards and low-volatility hedges even as risk appetite improves.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to re-risk selectively into AI-adjacent growth, but not to abandon discipline after an eight-week S&P 500 advance. Semiconductors remain the strongest strategic sleeve because performance and flows are still aligned: SMH is up 20.86% over 1M with $5.55B of YTD inflows, while SOXX, XSD, FTXL and PSI continue to show strong 1M returns. Software also remains flow-confirmed, with IGV attracting $6.55B YTD and gaining 5.94% over 1M. The broadening into hydrogen, space, quantum and clean energy is constructive for breadth, but should be treated as tactical unless flows confirm. The preferred posture is overweight semiconductors, AI infrastructure, quality software, cybersecurity, electrification/grid and selective space or hydrogen exposure, while staying underweight blockchain laggards, cannabis, China internet, flow-negative Natural Resources and small-cap beta until the decline in oil and yields proves durable.
