Theme Signal
Gaming, China internet and gold miners provided rare relative strength while semiconductors, AI infrastructure, blockchain and biotech capitulated, creating the strongest price-versus-flow divergence yet in the AI-hardware correction.
Investment Digest
The thematic setup enters Friday with an attempted AI/momentum rebound after Thursday’s disorderly selloff, when the Nasdaq suffered its largest decline since March 2020 and semiconductor losses reached double digits. The latest market update showed the weakness broadening beyond AI into cybersecurity, networking and financials, while Treasuries rallied sharply as investors repriced the potential growth impact of slower data-center construction and tighter financing conditions. Pasted markdown(20261106-114154) Friday’s bounce is being supported by oversold conditions, large multiple compression and somewhat softer post-election rhetoric around data-center development, but the underlying debate has not disappeared: compute demand remains very strong while financing capacity, power availability, permitting and returns on incremental AI capex have become the binding constraints. IREN’s demand and pricing commentary and LRCX’s $25B buyback provide fundamental support, but Anthropic valuation pushback and continuing neocloud credit stress argue against treating the bounce as a full reset. Today’s employment report is the macro catalyst, although the more important thematic question is whether investors continue funding AI hardware through the drawdown.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
Thursday’s theme data capture the severity of the liquidation. Only a handful of exposures finished higher: NERD gained 1.88%, KWEB 1.81%, HERO 1.53%, while GDX and ESPO each rose 1.37%. The downside was dramatically larger. LABU plunged 19.96%, PSI fell 14.14%, WGMI dropped 13.31%, BAI lost 12.74% and FTXL declined 12.45%; SOXX and SMH were down 12.15% and 11.21%. Yet flows are moving in precisely the opposite direction. SOXX attracted $6.59B over 1M and SMH another $3.76B, taking combined semiconductor inflows to approximately $10.35B despite 1M losses of 32.88% and 29.37%. QQQ and VGT also attracted $1.75B and $1.36B over 1M despite double-digit losses. This is no longer modest dip-buying—the data indicate substantial strategic accumulation into one of the sharpest AI-hardware drawdowns of the cycle.
Bottom Line
The tactical message is that AI hardware is now showing capitulation-like price action without capitulation in ownership. SOXX and SMH have attracted approximately $10.35B over the past month and $29.42B YTD even as both have lost roughly 30% in a month; that is the strongest accumulation-versus-price divergence in the current correction and argues for selectively rebuilding high-quality semiconductor exposure rather than abandoning the theme. The distinction within growth remains critical: QQQ and VGT are also attracting capital, while ARKK, IGV and MTUM remain in outflow, suggesting investors prefer profitable platforms and scarce hardware capacity over speculative or lower-quality growth. SCHD and VTV continue to provide the cleanest ballast, combining positive intermediate returns with inflows. The preferred posture is overweight dividend/value and broad-market exposure while incrementally adding high-quality semiconductors into extreme weakness; retain selective platform technology and cybersecurity, but remain underweight leveraged AI infrastructure, momentum, ARKK-style disruptive growth, blockchain and small caps until the violent price correction begins to stabilize.
