Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Cannabis, solar and housing led the latest theme tape while biotech, blockchain, cybersecurity and energy services sold off, reinforcing the rotation away from crowded AI-linked momentum even as semiconductor inflows continue to build.

Investment Digest

The thematic setup remains caught between improving breadth and repeated failures by the AI trade to sustain rebounds. Monday again illustrated that split: equal-weight outperformed the cap-weighted S&P by roughly 120 bp as financials, housing, industrials, retail and other cyclical groups advanced, while semiconductors, memory, opticals and neoclouds reversed early strength; the session also featured a 7.4% collapse in WTI as Middle East diplomacy expectations improved. Pasted markdown(20261103-114859) Tuesday’s backdrop is similar—AI is attempting another bounce, but funding, capex ROI and peak-growth concerns remain dominant despite consistently constructive compute-demand commentary. AAPL’s margin pressure from memory costs and PLTR’s post-earnings weakness reinforce the market’s increasingly high hurdle for AI-related companies, while ORCL’s discounted equity raise and Anthropic’s lower prospective valuation keep financing discipline central to the debate. JOLTS, the midterm elections and Wednesday’s Treasury refunding/ADP/ISM-services sequence are the immediate macro catalysts, but the thematic question remains whether persistent semiconductor accumulation can finally translate into relative-strength stabilization.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show leadership shifting sharply toward cannabis, solar and housing. MSOS gained 6.60%, CNBS 6.27%, YOLO 5.16%, TAN 4.65% and ITB 4.56%; JETS, XHB and water-infrastructure ETFs were also strong. The weakest exposures were LABU (-7.62%), WGMI (-6.97%), ARKG (-6.05%), BUG (-5.87%) and OIH (-5.48%), with AI infrastructure TCAI also down 5.03%. The more consequential signal remains fund flows. SOXX attracted $5.69B over 1M and SMH another $1.84B, taking combined semiconductor inflows to roughly $7.53B even as their 1M returns deteriorated to -22.97% and -19.39%. QQQ also attracted $2.19B and VGT $1.17B despite significant 1M drawdowns. That is increasingly strong evidence of accumulation into technology weakness, but price confirmation remains absent. By contrast, IWM, ARKK and MTUM remain in outflow, showing investors are still avoiding indiscriminate high-beta exposure.

Bottom Line

The tactical message is that semiconductor accumulation is becoming stronger even as semiconductor price momentum gets worse. SOXX and SMH have attracted roughly $7.53B over 1M and $27.85B YTD, yet both remain down roughly 20% or more over the past month. That divergence argues for selectively rebuilding high-quality hardware exposure, but not for treating every bounce as confirmation that the correction is over. QQQ and VGT inflows point to similar accumulation in broader technology, while SCHD’s 9.72% 1M gain alongside $2.13B of inflows provides the cleaner price-and-flow confirmation. Housing is also improving materially, with ITB up 11.92% over 1M. The preferred posture is overweight dividend/quality, selective housing and broad-market exposure while incrementally rebuilding semiconductors and platform technology; treat cannabis and solar strength as tactical, and remain underweight ARKK-style speculative growth, momentum, blockchain, small caps and weaker software until price trends begin confirming the capital already moving back into technology.
