Theme Signal

Cybersecurity and energy led the latest theme tape while biotech, cannabis and crypto lagged, as investors rotated toward themes with improving earnings visibility and away from speculative growth ahead of peak earnings and the FOMC.

Investment Digest

The thematic setup enters a catalyst-heavy week with a modestly constructive risk tone but a much higher bar for AI leadership. S&P futures are higher, crude is retreating and the weekend produced no meaningful escalation in the Middle East, but the central debate remains the cost and availability of capital needed to sustain the AI buildout. That issue will be tested directly as MSFT, GOOGL and AMZN report into Wednesday’s FOMC decision. Recent results continue to validate extraordinary compute demand—AWS capacity is largely committed through 2027 and into 2028—but investors increasingly want evidence of monetization, backlog conversion and adequate returns on the financing required to build that capacity. Friday’s market also showed that oil above $100 can quickly undermine the broadening trade through inflation and consumer channels. With the Fed expected to hold, the Warsh press conference, hyperscaler capex guidance and Thursday’s PCE/GDP releases should determine whether recent semiconductor accumulation becomes a durable leadership signal or merely aggressive dip-buying.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show cybersecurity and energy emerging as the strongest near-term exposures. OIH surged 5.40%, BUG gained 4.98%, IHAK rose 4.17%, HACK added 4.16% and CNXT gained 3.56%; CIBR was close behind at +3.22%. Cybersecurity has particularly strong confirmation beneath the daily move: BUG, IHAK, HACK and CIBR are up between 2.03% and 7.54% over 1M, while CIBR alone attracted $714M over that period. Energy is also improving on price, with XOP up 10.42% over 1M and FCG up 8.92%, although OIH’s $(192M) of 1M outflows shows that energy-services sponsorship is still incomplete. The weakest themes were biotech, cannabis and crypto: LABU fell 4.18%, MSOS 4.17%, CNBS 2.78%, HYDR 2.72% and WGMI 2.57%. Semiconductor prices remain damaged—SOXX and SMH are down 15.47% and 12.34% over 1M—but the flow signal has improved materially: the pair attracted roughly $2.07B of combined 1M inflows and retain about $25.46B YTD, indicating investors are continuing to accumulate the correction.

Bottom Line

The tactical message is that capital is beginning to move back toward technology, but investors are choosing where to take risk much more carefully. Semiconductor prices remain deeply corrected, yet SOXX and SMH now carry roughly $2.07B of combined 1M inflows and $25.46B YTD, a meaningful accumulation signal heading into hyperscaler earnings. Cybersecurity currently offers the cleaner price-and-flow combination, with broad weekly strength and positive CIBR sponsorship. SPY, VTI and QQQ inflows also show that investors are buying broad beta weakness rather than abandoning equities. By contrast, ARKK’s nearly $(3.0B) of 1M outflows, MTUM’s continued redemptions and the breakdown across crypto/cannabis argue against indiscriminate high-beta exposure. The preferred posture is overweight cybersecurity, selectively rebuilding semiconductors and AI hardware, broad-market/platform technology and dividend-quality exposure; maintain tactical energy exposure while crude remains firm, but remain underweight broad momentum, ARKK-style speculative growth, crypto, cannabis and small caps until price trends and sponsorship improve.
