Theme Signal
Energy, solar and energy infrastructure led the latest theme tape while biotechnology and semiconductors weakened further, extending the rotation away from crowded AI hardware ahead of CPI.
Investment Digest
The thematic setup remains rotational rather than outright risk-off. Tuesday again produced relatively healthy breadth even as semiconductors and memory weakened for a fifth consecutive session, while lower long-end yields and dovish comments from Waller and Williams helped contain index-level downside. Pasted markdown Wednesday’s premarket points toward another difficult session for AI hardware after ASML’s outlook failed to clear an exceptionally high expectations bar, even though management continues to describe very strong AI-related demand. That distinction remains critical: the compute cycle is still expanding, but the market is increasingly unwilling to reward demand growth without equally strong earnings, financing and capacity visibility. September CPI is therefore the dominant macro catalyst. A benign core reading would ease the valuation pressure that has contributed to the semiconductor correction; a hotter print would reinforce the rotation toward energy, cash flow, dividends and other less duration-sensitive exposures. Bank earnings and Anthropic’s investor update add a second test of whether Q3 fundamentals can offset the market’s rising hurdle rate.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show energy reclaiming leadership while biotechnology and AI hardware remain under pressure. XOP rose 2.85%, TAN gained 2.07%, FCG advanced 1.98%, PEJ added 1.11% and ENFR rose 1.07%; pipelines and MLP infrastructure were also broadly positive. The weakest exposures were concentrated in biotech and speculative growth: LABU fell 9.14%, SBIO lost 4.10%, WGMI declined 3.05%, XBI dropped 3.04% and YOLO fell 2.96%. The more important development is in flows. Semiconductor sponsorship has deteriorated further, with SMH and SOXX seeing combined 1M outflows of approximately $(2.53B) even though both remain positive over 1M. QQQ, however, has swung back to $4.38B of 1M inflows, indicating that investors are not abandoning growth broadly—they are increasingly differentiating between megacap/platform exposure and the more crowded hardware trade. Cybersecurity remains one of the cleaner targeted growth signals, with CIBR up 13.85% over 1M alongside $1.27B of inflows.
Bottom Line
The tactical message is that the market is rotating within growth rather than abandoning growth altogether. QQQ’s $4.38B of 1M inflows alongside a 4.12% gain contrasts sharply with the roughly $(2.53B) being withdrawn from SMH and SOXX and $(588M) from BAI, suggesting capital is moving away from crowded AI hardware toward megacap platforms and more diversified growth. Semiconductors still retain roughly $18.30B of combined YTD inflows, so the structural AI thesis remains intact, but near-term positioning should stay lighter until TSM earnings and the flow picture improve. Cybersecurity remains the strongest targeted growth allocation, while energy and infrastructure have the best immediate relative-strength signal. The preferred posture is overweight cybersecurity, broad growth/platform exposure, selective energy and energy infrastructure, with dividend and core fixed-income ballast; maintain semiconductors at strategic but reduced tactical weights and remain underweight leveraged biotech, broad momentum, speculative blockchain and small caps until CPI and the next round of semiconductor earnings clarify the next leadership regime.
