Theme Signal
Biotech and cybersecurity led the latest theme tape, while precious metals, China innovation and blockchain lagged as higher yields and renewed AI-financing scrutiny kept risk appetite selective.
Investment Digest
The thematic backdrop remains cautious after Monday’s selloff, with higher Treasury yields again pressuring the AI trade, software, financials and metals while biotechnology and cybersecurity showed relative resilience. The latest market update highlighted 10-year yields approaching multi-decade highs, weakness across semis/memory and Big Tech, and a market increasingly focused on AI security, financing costs and this week’s PCE/ISM/payrolls sequence. The AI infrastructure debate is becoming more capital-intensive: Anthropic’s IPO filing reportedly details roughly $518B of future cloud and infrastructure commitments, much of it non-cancelable, underscoring both the persistence of compute demand and the financing burden created by the buildout. (Reuters) Geopolitics remains mixed rather than clearly improving, with the U.S. and Iran continuing mediated contacts but disagreement persisting over sanctions relief and nuclear terms. (Reuters) Against that backdrop, today’s JOLTS and confidence data, Wednesday’s PCE/ADP releases and Friday payrolls will determine whether yields can stabilize enough for the AI rebound to resume.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show biotechnology and cybersecurity at the top of the leaderboard. LABU rose 2.98%, BUG gained 1.54%, IHAK advanced 1.09%, XBI added 1.02% and HACK rose 0.94%. Cybersecurity breadth was particularly constructive, with CIBR also up 0.71%, while broader biotech exposure through IBB and FBT finished higher. The weakest themes were precious metals, China innovation and blockchain: SILJ fell 5.54%, SLV lost 5.49%, GDX declined 5.36%, CNXT dropped 4.36% and WGMI fell 4.06%. Flows remain far more constructive toward broad beta and selective hardware than the daily tape suggests: VTI attracted $4.99B over 1M, SPY $4.44B, SCHD $3.04B, GLD $2.35B and SOXX $2.16B. Conversely, QQQ saw $(5.11B) of 1M outflows and MTUM lost $(5.04B), reinforcing the ongoing rotation away from broad growth/momentum toward targeted exposures.
Bottom Line
The tactical takeaway is to keep AI exposure targeted rather than broad while yields remain the primary constraint on valuation. Semiconductors still have one of the strongest combinations of intermediate price performance and sponsorship: SOXX and SMH are up 10.33% and 8.48% over 1M and hold roughly $21.66B of combined YTD inflows, despite Monday’s pullback. Cybersecurity is showing relative-strength improvement and looks more constructive than broad software, where IGV remains in outflow. Biotech has the strongest latest price signal but remains volatile and weak over 1M, making the move tactical rather than a confirmed trend. Precious metals are particularly weak, with falling prices coinciding with GDX, SLV and GLD outflows on a YTD basis. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, cybersecurity, broad-market beta and dividend/value ballast; maintain tactical biotech exposure, while underweighting broad momentum, QQQ-style growth, precious-metals miners, China innovation, small caps and weaker blockchain exposure until PCE, ISM and payrolls clarify whether the latest yield backup can stabilize.
