Theme Signal
Cannabis, biotech, precious-metals miners and semiconductors led the latest theme tape, while banks, energy producers and MLP infrastructure lagged as lower crude supported growth but financials remained under pressure.
Investment Digest
The thematic backdrop remains constructive but increasingly selective after the AI-led rally extended Tuesday, with semiconductors and memory outperforming while financials, software and entertainment lagged. The latest market update showed the Nasdaq reaching another record close as inference-demand enthusiasm, Meta’s Muse momentum and cheaper frontier models continued to broaden the AI infrastructure narrative, while crude extended its decline on improving Saudi supply and Strait of Hormuz transit expectations. Wednesday’s setup is quieter, with futures little changed, oil lower again and Treasuries stable ahead of September flash PMIs and the 5-year auction. The key thematic development is that semiconductor leadership now has much better flow confirmation, but the strongest daily price action has rotated into cannabis, biotech and miners—evidence that risk appetite is broadening even while banks and energy remain pressured.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show cannabis dominating the daily leaderboard. MSOS rose 7.89%, YOLO gained 6.62%, CNBS advanced 6.16% and MJ added 6.08%, while leveraged biotech LABU gained 7.11%. Natural Resources also strengthened, with SILJ up 4.36%, GDX up 3.60% and KOPX up 2.85%. Semiconductors remained a major secondary leader: PSI rose 2.57%, SOXX and FTXL each gained 2.40%, SOXQ rose 2.04% and SMH advanced 1.92%. The weakest areas were financials and energy, with KBWB down 2.33%, IAI down 1.96%, IAT down 1.86%, XOP off 1.70% and FCG down 1.51%. Flows reinforce the improving semiconductor signal: SOXX attracted $2.92B over 1M and SMH $1.18B, while QQQ lost $(9.80B). That points to continued rotation away from broad growth beta and toward more targeted AI hardware exposure.
Bottom Line
The tactical takeaway is to remain constructive on AI hardware while allowing for broader tactical participation. Semiconductors now combine strong price action with improving sponsorship: SOXX and SMH have roughly $4.09B of combined 1M inflows, $21.09B YTD, and 1M returns of 10.21% and 8.39%. Cannabis has the strongest latest price momentum but remains a higher-volatility tactical sleeve, while the miner rebound lacks flow confirmation—GDX and KOPX are both seeing 1M outflows. QQQ’s $(9.80B) 1M outflow despite a 4.87% gain reinforces the preference for targeted AI exposure over broad growth beta. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, broad-market beta and dividend exposure, with tactical cannabis/biotech exposure; remain underweight banks, energy producers, small caps and flow-negative miners/software until PMIs, Treasury supply and the next rates impulse clarify whether recent improvement in breadth can persist.
