A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Precious metals, biotech, blockchain and oil services led the latest theme tape, while cybersecurity, software and cloud lagged despite broader yield stabilization and positive AI compute/capex read-throughs.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is stabilizing but still selective after Wednesday’s bounce broke a three-day losing streak and delivered the first positive breadth session in five days. The latest market update highlighted support from rate stabilization, softer ADP private payrolls, centrist comments from Fed’s Williams, and continued positive AI compute/capex demand takeaways, while also noting that NFP on Friday and CPI next Friday remain the key tests for the Fed/rates backdrop. Thursday’s setup is cautious but not outright risk-off, with futures slightly lower, oil firmer, gold higher and Treasuries little changed. AI remains structurally supported by DELL, AVGO, SNOW, HPE and NTAP commentary, but ETF price action is showing a rotation away from software/cybersecurity and toward precious metals, biotech, blockchain, energy services and broader cyclicals.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show precious metals and higher-beta idiosyncratic risk leading. SILJ rose 5.36%, LABU gained 3.69%, GDX advanced 3.13%, WGMI added 3.05% and OIH rose 2.27%. The move reflects renewed interest in debasement hedges, biotech optionality, blockchain beta and energy services as oil holds firm near recent highs. The weakest themes were cybersecurity and software, with CIBR down 2.77%, IGV off 2.60%, BUG lower by 2.36%, HACK down 2.21% and IHAK off 2.15%. Flow leadership remains concentrated in broad growth, broad beta, gold and dividend/value, with QQQ attracting $16.95B over 1M, VTI $7.39B, GLD $6.96B, SCHD $3.88B and EFV $2.28B. Semiconductor flows remain the biggest caution flag, with SOXX seeing $(3.68B) of 1M outflows and SMH losing $(2.92B), even though both remain among the largest YTD inflow vehicles.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive but rotate the risk budget toward themes that can work in a yield-stabilization, oil-supported, pre-payrolls market. Precious metals, biotech, blockchain and oil services have the strongest latest price signal, while broad growth and broad beta remain well sponsored through QQQ and VTI. The caution is that software and cybersecurity are giving back leadership despite positive AI enterprise commentary, and semiconductors still show heavy 1M outflows across SOXX and SMH. The preferred posture is overweight broad beta, dividend/value, precious metals, selective biotech, oil services and tactical blockchain, while keeping AI exposure focused on the highest-quality compute/capex beneficiaries and underweighting cybersecurity laggards, broad software, small caps, broad momentum and crowded semiconductor vehicles until Waller, ISM services and Friday payrolls clarify whether rates can remain contained.
