Theme Signal
Cybersecurity, software, cloud and AI-linked growth led the latest theme tape, while cannabis, housing, travel and REITs lagged ahead of Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech.
Investment Digest
The thematic backdrop remains constructive but narrow. Thursday’s tape was driven almost entirely by technology, with NVDA’s well-received report and +70% FY28 revenue guide reviving AI sentiment, while software earnings from CRM, CRWD, VEEV, OKTA and others helped push back against the AI disruption narrative and refocused investors on AI monetization. However, breadth was negative, equal-weight lagged by more than 100 bp, and all sectors outside technology finished lower, which keeps the rally from looking fully broad-based. Friday’s setup is slightly more cautious, with futures a touch lower and investors waiting on Fed Chair Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech, the payrolls benchmark revision and final University of Michigan sentiment. The key thematic message is that AI leadership has rotated from pure semiconductor beta toward software, cybersecurity and AI monetization, while housing, travel, cannabis and REITs remain vulnerable to rate and consumer uncertainty.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show software and cybersecurity dominating the leaderboard. BUG rose 10.41%, HACK gained 8.18%, IGV advanced 7.74%, CIBR added 7.61% and IHAK rose 7.56%. Cloud also participated, with WCLD up 7.51%, CLOU up 5.24% and XSW up 5.22%. The weakest areas were cannabis, travel, housing and REITs, with YOLO down 3.71%, PEJ off 1.85%, ITB lower by 1.73%, XHB down 1.40% and JETS off 1.38%. Flows continue to favor broad growth, broad beta, precious metals and selective AI hardware: QQQ attracted $14.40B over 1M, VTI $7.26B, GLD $5.26B, SCHD $4.12B and SMH $3.34B. However, SOXX still saw $(455.04M) of 1M outflows and IGV saw $(386.29M), showing that even as software and semiconductors are working on price, ETF sponsorship remains selective.
Bottom Line
The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive on AI, but shift the overweight toward software, cybersecurity and selective semiconductors rather than broad momentum. Cybersecurity and software have the strongest latest price signal, with BUG, HACK, IGV, CIBR and IHAK leading and IGV up 21.35% over 1M. Broad growth flows remain strong through QQQ, while VTI and SCHD continue to anchor broad beta and dividend/value ballast. Semiconductor exposure looks healthier after NVDA, especially through SMH, but SOXX’s 1M outflow shows investors are still not buying the entire sleeve indiscriminately. The preferred posture is overweight cybersecurity, software, selective semiconductors, broad growth, broad beta, dividend/value and precious-metals hedges, while underweighting cannabis, housing, travel, REITs, small caps and weaker momentum until Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech and next week’s labor data clarify the next rates/risk impulse.
