A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

MLPs, energy infrastructure and biotech led the latest theme tape, while blockchain, semiconductors, AI infrastructure and hydrogen lagged as momentum pressure broadened across the AI hardware complex.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is more cautious after Tuesday’s lower close and another round of pressure in semiconductors, memory and AI-linked momentum. The provided market update pointed to a rotation-style selloff rather than a full risk-off move, with software, energy, pharma/biotech, A&D, insurers and media outperforming while semis, memory, networking, industrials, housing, space and small caps lagged. The main macro overhang remains the global backup in long-term rates, with fiscal supply, AI-related corporate issuance, oil and Fed credibility all feeding the elevated-rate narrative. Oil is also firmer again as Iranian shipping attacks keep Strait of Hormuz risk in focus. Today’s tape is waiting on the 20-year Treasury auction and July FOMC minutes, with investors looking for more detail on the Fed reaction function even though the minutes are stale relative to softer July data.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show leadership concentrated in income-oriented energy infrastructure and select biotech. AMZA rose 1.96%, MLPX gained 1.88%, SBIO advanced 1.88%, UMI added 1.86% and ENFR rose 1.77%. The strength in MLPs and midstream aligns with higher crude and renewed geopolitical risk, while biotech continues to attract tactical interest after recent single-stock catalysts. The weakest themes were blockchain, semiconductors and AI infrastructure: WGMI fell 8.62%, PSI lost 7.05%, TCAI declined 6.65%, BKCH dropped 5.82% and XSD fell 5.75%. Flows show broad growth and broad beta still supported, with QQQ attracting $8.46B over 1M, VTI $6.62B, SPY $4.78B, SCHD $3.72B and GLD $3.55B. Semiconductor flows deteriorated sharply, with SOXX seeing $(4.88B) of 1M outflows, FTXL $(921.14M) and SMH $(706.07M), despite still-positive YTD sponsorship.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive on the broader market but reduce reliance on AI hardware beta until rates and positioning stabilize. MLPs, midstream energy and biotech have the strongest latest price signal, while semiconductors and AI infrastructure are showing clear short-term distribution. SOXX, SMH and FTXL now have a combined $(6.50B) of 1M outflows, even though SOXX and SMH still retain $16.49B of combined YTD inflows. That argues for keeping strategic AI exposure but avoiding indiscriminate semiconductor buying. The preferred posture is overweight broad beta, dividend/value, MLPs, energy infrastructure, select biotech and precious-metals hedges, while underweighting blockchain, high-beta semiconductor vehicles, weaker AI infrastructure, small caps and crowded momentum until the 20-year auction, FOMC minutes and Friday PMIs clarify whether long yields can stabilize.
