Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Biotech, China innovation, cannabis, blockchain and semiconductors led the latest theme tape, but the morning setup is more cautious as higher long yields, oil risk and renewed memory/semi pressure weigh on sentiment.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is constructive but less clean than last week’s record-high tape. Monday’s market update showed higher oil and higher long yields pressuring equities, with the 30-year Treasury yield above 5.30% and investors focused on fiscal pressure, AI-linked corporate supply, Fed credibility and renewed Iran/Strait of Hormuz escalation. At the same time, semis and memory outperformed, while software, big tech, retail, payments, managed care and staples lagged. Tuesday’s premarket setup is more risk-off, with futures lower, Japan and Korea weaker, WTI higher and investors watching ADP, import prices, housing data, industrial production, Wednesday’s FOMC minutes and this week’s 20-year Treasury auction. The key thematic message is that AI remains structurally supported, but higher rates, oil risk and renewed financing/circularity concerns are keeping investors selective.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show leadership in biotech, China innovation, cannabis, blockchain and semiconductors. LABU rose 3.89%, CNXT gained 3.33%, YOLO advanced 3.13%, WGMI added 3.06% and BITQ rose 2.91%. Semiconductors also remained firm in the realized tape, with PSI up 2.87%, FTXL up 1.68%, SOXQ up 1.67%, SOXX up 1.58% and SMH up 1.06%. The weakest themes were cybersecurity, cloud software, travel and internet, with BUG down 2.78%, IHAK off 2.62%, WCLD down 2.45%, XSW lower by 2.28% and JETS down 2.25%. Flows show broad growth, broad beta and precious metals attracting capital, with QQQ taking in $9.70B over 1M, VTI $5.56B, GLD $4.31B, SCHD $3.55B and SPY $2.89B. However, SOXX saw $(4.48B) of 1M outflows despite a 7.15% 1M return and $9.39B YTD inflows, reinforcing that investors are still actively rotating inside the AI hardware sleeve.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive, but do not ignore the rates/oil pressure building beneath the surface. Biotech, China innovation, cannabis, blockchain and semiconductors are showing the strongest latest price action, while software and cybersecurity are cooling after a strong run. Broad growth and broad beta flows are improving through QQQ, VTI and SPY, but SOXX’s $(4.48B) 1M outflow shows that semiconductor investors are taking profits or rotating vehicles even as the group’s price action improves. The preferred posture is overweight broad beta, selective semiconductors, biotech, China innovation, precious metals and dividend/value ballast, while underweighting cybersecurity/cloud laggards, small caps, broad momentum and the weakest AI hardware vehicles until FOMC minutes, Treasury supply and flash PMIs clarify whether long yields can stabilize.
