Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Cloud software and cybersecurity led the latest theme tape, while biotech, blockchain, miners and China internet lagged as investors waited on retail sales and University of Michigan inflation expectations.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop remains constructive but quieter after Thursday’s broad risk-on session, with software, memory, media, transports, builders and food among the market leaders while precious metals, industrial metals, machinery and biotech lagged. The latest market update showed cooler core PPI helping support lower rate pressure, continued AI earnings strength supporting chip and memory names, and investors still focused on improving AI ROI, compute pricing, cleaner positioning and the reopening of the buyback window. Friday’s setup is more balanced, with futures little changed, oil slightly higher, gold and silver softer, and investors watching retail sales and University of Michigan inflation expectations before next week’s lighter macro calendar. The key thematic message is that AI enthusiasm is still intact, but the leadership baton has rotated toward software, cloud and cybersecurity rather than pure semiconductor beta.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show cloud software and cybersecurity at the top of the leaderboard. WCLD rose 5.65%, CLOU gained 4.83%, XSW advanced 4.42%, SKYY added 3.91% and BUG rose 3.90%. IGV also gained 3.10% and is now up 14.65% over 1M, confirming software’s short-term price leadership even though it still carries $(1.08B) of 1M outflows. The weakest areas were biotech, blockchain and miners, with LABU down 4.48%, WGMI off 4.00%, KOPX down 3.15%, GDX lower by 2.96% and KWEB down 2.51%. Flows show broad growth and beta re-engagement, with QQQ attracting $10.36B over 1M, VTI $6.06B, SCHD $3.76B, EFV $3.24B and GLD $2.82B. Semiconductors remain strong on a YTD basis, but SOXX saw $(1.03B) of 1M outflows while FTXL lost $(884.11M), showing investors are still selective inside AI hardware.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive but rotate toward software, cloud and cybersecurity while keeping semiconductor exposure selective. Software now has the strongest price signal, with WCLD, CLOU, XSW, SKYY and IGV all showing double-digit 1M returns, but IGV’s 1M outflow shows the allocation shift is not fully confirmed. Semiconductors remain important strategically, with SOXX and SMH still holding combined YTD inflows of $18.36B, but SOXX’s 1M outflow and negative 1M return argue for discipline. The preferred posture is overweight cloud software, cybersecurity, broad growth, dividend/value ballast and selective semiconductors, while underweighting leveraged biotech, blockchain, China internet, small caps and weaker commodity sleeves until retail sales, inflation expectations and next week’s FOMC minutes/PMIs clarify the next macro impulse.
