Theme Signal
Gold, silver, miners and copper led the latest theme tape, while cannabis, blockchain, solar and energy beta lagged as investors balanced strong Q2 earnings with AI-capex scrutiny and Friday’s payrolls risk.
Investment Digest
The thematic backdrop is constructive but no longer one-way risk-on. Wednesday’s tape finished mixed to lower, with big tech mostly down, software mixed, and semis/memory giving back part of Tuesday’s rally, though NVDA remained a notable Mag 7 outperformer. The broader narrative still has support from strong Q2 earnings, cleaner positioning after the July momentum unwind, solid macro data and hopes for a US-Iran Strait of Hormuz off-ramp, but the latest earnings batch kept AI capex scrutiny, elevated expectations, adoption/usage trends and resilient travel demand in focus. Thursday’s setup is quiet, with futures slightly higher, gold firm, oil little changed and investors waiting for claims, productivity, unit labor costs and Friday’s payrolls report. The tactical message is that AI hardware remains investable, but the latest price leadership has shifted toward precious metals, miners, copper and select defensive/broadening exposures.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show a sharp leadership move in Natural Resources. GDX rose 7.39%, SILJ gained 6.28%, SLV advanced 4.14%, GLD added 4.14% and KOPX rose 3.25%. Biotech also participated selectively, with LABU up 2.48%, though the broader biotechnology group remains mixed over 1M. The weakest themes were cannabis, blockchain, solar and energy: MSOS fell 7.13%, CNBS lost 6.51%, WGMI declined 4.78%, MJ fell 4.17% and TAN dropped 3.93%. Flow data still favor broad beta and AI hardware: VTI attracted $10.92B over 1M, SPY $6.91B, SOXX $6.86B, SMH $3.94B and EFV $3.74B. However, QQQ saw $(6.55B) of 1M outflows, showing investors are still reducing broad growth beta even as they continue to fund targeted semiconductor exposure.
Bottom Line
The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive, but pair AI hardware exposure with more ballast from broad beta, dividend/value and Natural Resources. SOXX and SMH remain flow-confirmed with combined 1M inflows of $10.80B and combined YTD inflows of $22.31B, but both are still negative over 1M and down on the day. Natural Resources have the strongest latest price signal, with GDX, SILJ, SLV, GLD and KOPX leading, though GLD and SLV remain large YTD outflow vehicles. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, broad beta, dividend/value, copper/miners and high-quality software, while underweighting cannabis, blockchain, clean energy beta, small caps and broad QQQ-style growth until Friday’s payrolls and next week’s CPI clarify whether the earnings-led rebound can keep broadening.
