A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Biotech, semiconductors and AI infrastructure led the latest theme tape as momentum continued to repair, while blockchain, energy producers and REITs lagged.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop remains constructive, with equities building on Tuesday’s broad rally after the S&P 500 closed at its first record high since June. The latest market update showed semis, memory, software and reopening trades all participating, helped by strong Q2 earnings, cleaner positioning after the July momentum unwind, positive macro surprise momentum and renewed Middle East diplomatic optimism that has weighed on oil and yields. The key tension is that the AI trade is improving, but still faces a high bar: AMD and SpaceX were pressured by elevated expectations and capex concerns, while ANET’s AI-networking upside, hyperscaler earnings, optical strength and continued semiconductor flow support keep the compute/capex narrative intact. Today’s focus shifts to ADP, ISM services, Treasury refunding details and whether earnings can keep validating the rebound before Friday’s payrolls report.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show a decisive rebound in biotechnology, semiconductors and AI-linked hardware. LABU rose 9.40%, FTXL gained 7.52%, SOXX advanced 6.80%, SOXQ added 6.53% and ARTY rose 6.27%. Semiconductor breadth was strong, with BAI up 6.24%, XSD up 6.14%, SHOC up 6.05%, PSI up 5.69% and SMH up 5.55%. The weakest areas were far less severe and concentrated in blockchain, energy and REITs: WGMI fell 3.65%, FCG lost 1.68%, XOP declined 1.34%, RWR fell 0.78% and BBRE dropped 0.64%. Flows remain strongly supportive of AI hardware, with SOXX attracting $8.03B over 1M and $14.24B YTD, while SMH attracted $4.34B over 1M and $9.64B YTD. Broad beta also strengthened through VTI, which drew $13.10B over 1M and $45.09B YTD.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive and let the AI hardware rebound work, but keep exposure focused on the cleanest flow-confirmed sleeves. SOXX and SMH now combine for $12.37B of 1M inflows and $23.88B YTD, while both delivered strong daily rebounds. FTXL’s daily leadership but 1M outflow shows investors are still rotating within the semiconductor complex rather than buying every vehicle equally. Biotech’s LABU rebound is powerful but tactical given its leveraged structure and negative 1M return. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, broad beta, dividend/value ballast, and high-quality software/networking beneficiaries, while underweighting blockchain, crude-linked energy, REIT laggards, flow-negative metals and broad small-cap beta until ISM services, ADP, payrolls and the next earnings wave confirm that the momentum rebound can broaden.
