A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Internet, cloud software, cybersecurity and energy led the latest theme tape, while biotech, blockchain, gaming and miners lagged as investors balanced a momentum stabilization attempt against open-source AI competition, oil volatility and a heavy earnings/data week.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is more constructive to start August, with futures higher, oil sharply lower and investors leaning into renewed “escalate-to-deescalate” hopes around the Middle East. The latest market update showed momentum improving after Thursday’s large bounce, helped by AMZN’s AWS acceleration and stronger AI/chip-business commentary, though AAPL’s softer guide kept supply constraints and input-cost pressure in focus. It also flagged a renewed yield backup, Fed credibility concerns, August seasonality and a busy week of earnings and July macro data as key watchpoints. The tactical read is that investors are still willing to fund targeted AI hardware and software exposure, but the leadership mix is broadening toward internet, cloud, cybersecurity, energy and electrification rather than pure semiconductor beta.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show internet, cloud software, cybersecurity and energy leading. FDN rose 2.59%, OIH gained 2.39%, SKYY advanced 2.12%, CIBR added 2.01% and FCG rose 1.91%. China internet also screened well, with KWEB up 1.53% and up 16.43% over 1M, while cloud software strength showed up through WCLD up 1.57% and CLOU up 1.25%. The weakest areas were high-volatility biotech, blockchain, miners and gaming: LABU fell 8.60%, STCE lost 4.08%, BKCH declined 4.05%, CRPT dropped 3.54% and GDX fell 3.49%. Flows continue to favor semiconductors despite weak 1M returns, with SOXX attracting $6.92B over 1M and $14.67B YTD, while SMH attracted $4.47B over 1M and $10.61B YTD. Broad growth remains under pressure, with QQQ seeing $(4.97B) of 1M outflows and $(1.98B) YTD.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive, but favor targeted leadership over broad growth beta. SOXX and SMH remain the clearest flow-confirmed AI hardware sleeves, with combined 1M inflows of $11.39B and combined YTD inflows of $25.28B, but both remain sharply negative over 1M, so the semiconductor trade is still in repair mode. Internet, cloud software, cybersecurity and energy services are showing better short-term leadership, while blockchain and high-volatility biotech remain weak. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, cloud software, cybersecurity, internet/digital platforms, energy services and dividend/value ballast, while underweighting blockchain, leveraged biotech, flow-negative metals, broad small-cap beta and QQQ-style growth until ISM, services data, payrolls and this week’s earnings confirm whether the momentum rebound can broaden.
