A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Cannabis, housing, nuclear/SMR and selective semiconductors led the latest theme tape, while China internet, silver, miners, REITs and software lagged ahead of July CPI.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop remains constructive but cautious as investors wait for July CPI and the next read on Fed policy risk. Tuesday’s market update showed another quiet session, with semis, memory and data-center plays outperforming while the broader market remained in waiting mode ahead of CPI/PPI and amid a roughly 50% probability of September tightening. AI compute and capex demand remain supported by recent infrastructure and data-center headlines, but the market is also watching whether the rebound can survive inflation data, Treasury supply, and ongoing uncertainty around Strait of Hormuz diplomacy. Oil pressure has moderated from recent spikes, but Gulf shipping disruptions and Tehran’s latest threat to keep Hormuz closed until demands are met remain enough to keep the inflation-risk premium alive.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show cannabis and housing at the top of the daily leaderboard. MSOS rose 5.23%, CNBS gained 4.82%, YOLO advanced 4.81%, MJ added 4.60% and WGMI rose 2.44%. Housing also screened well, with ITB up 2.14% and XHB up 1.90%, while nuclear/SMR exposure participated through SMRF up 1.96% and NLR up 1.87%. Select semiconductors improved, with PSI up 1.82%, SOXX up 0.91%, FTXL up 0.90% and SMH up 0.62%, but the broader AI hardware sleeve remains mixed over 1M. The weakest areas were China internet, silver, software, miners and REITs, with KWEB down 3.54%, SLV down 1.45%, LFSC down 1.32%, OGIG down 1.22% and RWR down 1.08%. Flows show broad beta and growth re-engagement, with SPY attracting $9.01B over 1M, QQQ $8.16B, VTI $5.35B, SCHD $3.40B and EFV $3.28B, while SOXX saw $(1.53B) of 1M outflows despite $9.95B YTD inflows.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to stay constructive into CPI, but keep exposure more balanced. Cannabis has the strongest latest price signal, though it remains a tactical sleeve. Housing and nuclear/SMR are improving, while semiconductors are showing early stabilization but still have weak 1M returns and recent 1M outflows in SOXX and FTXL. Broad beta and dividend/value flows remain strong through SPY, VTI and SCHD, while QQQ’s renewed 1M inflow suggests growth investors are re-engaging selectively. The preferred posture is overweight broad beta, dividend/value ballast, selective semiconductors, housing, nuclear/SMR and high-quality software/cybersecurity, while underweighting China internet, weaker semiconductor vehicles, REIT laggards, small caps and flow-negative metals until CPI, PPI and retail sales clarify whether the Fed/rates backdrop can support continued broadening.
