A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Energy services, producers, silver and cybersecurity led the latest theme tape, while blockchain, semiconductors, travel and housing lagged as investors waited on July CPI.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is more mixed after Monday’s quiet pullback and ahead of Wednesday’s CPI report. The latest market update showed higher oil and higher yields weighing on equities, with crude supported by tougher US-Iran rhetoric and limited Strait of Hormuz reopening progress, while yields were pressured by supply, AI financing competition and some reversal of last week’s dovish Fed repricing. The tape is still constructive enough to support software, cybersecurity, energy and select Natural Resources, but the AI trade is again more conflicted as investors debate NVIDIA-linked infrastructure financing, Chinese open-source competition, falling enterprise AI costs and Apple’s potential use of Chinese memory chips. The tactical question is whether CPI validates the market’s earnings-led risk appetite or pulls attention back toward sticky inflation, Fed credibility and the 52% probability now priced for a September hike.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show energy services, producers, silver and cybersecurity at the top of the tape. OIH rose 5.94%, XOP gained 5.73%, FCG advanced 5.08%, SLV added 3.32% and HACK rose 3.27%. Software and cybersecurity also held up well, with BUG up 3.17%, CLOU up 2.97%, SKYY up 2.95% and WCLD up 2.67%. The weakest areas were blockchain, semiconductors, travel and housing: WGMI fell 5.95%, BKCH lost 4.45%, STCE dropped 4.35%, PSI declined 3.95% and XSD fell 3.54%. Flows show investors moving back into broad growth and beta, with QQQ attracting $11.43B over 1M, SPY $5.45B, VTI $5.09B, SCHD $3.26B and EFV $3.02B. Semiconductors remain strongly sponsored on a YTD basis, but SOXX has only $9.45M of 1M inflows while FTXL saw $(897.65M) of 1M outflows, reinforcing that buyers are becoming more selective inside the AI hardware sleeve.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to keep the portfolio constructive but more inflation-aware into CPI. Energy services, producers, silver and cybersecurity have the strongest latest price signal, while semiconductors remain the most important but still technically fragile AI sleeve. SOXX and SMH still have combined YTD inflows of $20.18B, but both are negative over 1M and down on the day, while FTXL outflows show weaker sponsorship in parts of the group. The preferred posture is overweight energy services, selective Natural Resources, cybersecurity, quality software, broad beta and dividend/value ballast, while underweighting blockchain, weaker semiconductor vehicles, travel, housing and small caps until CPI, PPI and retail sales clarify whether the Fed/rates backdrop will allow risk appetite to keep broadening.
