A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Semiconductors, China innovation, blockchain and biotech led the latest theme tape, but the morning setup is more cautious as oil spikes and investors question whether Tuesday’s momentum bounce has real follow-through.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop remains choppy, with Tuesday’s momentum rebound giving investors a cleaner AI-hardware bounce but Wednesday’s premarket tape already questioning its durability. The latest market update showed memory, semiconductors and AI infrastructure leading Tuesday’s rally, while geopolitics stayed in the background despite oil’s month-to-date surge and ongoing Red Sea/Strait of Hormuz risks. This morning’s setup is more mixed: futures are lower, WTI is sharply higher, and the market is still debating whether the AI unwind has run its course or whether open-source competition, hyperscaler debt/capex scrutiny, memory pricing and model oversight risks will keep pressure on the group. The key tactical issue is whether earnings can shift the conversation back toward compute demand and AI capex durability before oil, tariffs and Fed-rate risk re-tighten the risk backdrop.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show a strong rebound in semiconductors, China innovation, blockchain and biotech. PSI rose 7.59%, CNXT gained 7.30%, CRPT advanced 7.25%, LABU rose 6.80% and BKCH added 6.67%. The semiconductor rebound was broader than just one fund, with FTXL up 5.98%, SOXX up 5.45%, SOXQ up 5.31% and SMH up 4.52%. The weakest areas were software and cybersecurity, with WCLD down 3.33%, BUG down 2.82%, HACK down 1.98%, IHAK down 1.96% and CLOU down 1.69%, showing that investors favored AI hardware over software and security beneficiaries. Flows remain heavily supportive of semiconductors, with SOXX attracting $7.69B over 1M and $14.58B YTD, while SMH still saw $(4.25B) of 1M outflows despite $8.78B YTD inflows.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to participate in the AI hardware rebound, but not chase it indiscriminately. SOXX remains the strongest flow-confirmed semiconductor vehicle, with $7.69B of 1M inflows and $14.58B YTD, but its -13.57% 1M return shows the group is still repairing technical damage. SMH’s $4.25B of 1M outflows reinforces that investors are still trimming crowded AI-hardware exposure even as Tuesday’s price action improved. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, China innovation and broad beta, while keeping blockchain and biotech tactical and underweighting software/cybersecurity laggards, flow-negative metals, small-cap beta and crowded momentum until earnings confirm whether the AI capex trade can regain durable leadership.
