A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Biotechnology, cannabis and energy led the latest theme tape, while China innovation, robotics/AI, housing, travel and China internet lagged; Monday’s setup is more constructive as investors look for momentum stabilization after last week’s AI selloff.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is trying to stabilize after a difficult week for semiconductors, memory and AI infrastructure. Friday’s market brief showed the SOX falling more than 20% from its June 22 high, with pressure tied to technical unwind, open-source AI competition, capex sustainability, China DRAM competition, memory capacity expansion and broader AI backlash. The Monday setup is modestly better, with futures higher and investors again leaning on the idea that the momentum drawdown is more technical than fundamental. However, the market is not yet out of the woods: South Korea remains under pressure, Middle East tensions are still active, Brent briefly pushed above $91, and the AI narrative is now being challenged by cost overruns, financing complexity and competitive pressure from China’s open-source models. The key tactical question is whether AI hardware can stabilize before Big Tech earnings, or whether investors continue rotating toward healthcare, energy, dividend/value and select real-asset themes.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show biotechnology and energy/cannabis leadership. LABU rose 4.22%, SBIO gained 2.77%, YOLO advanced 2.69%, MSOS added 2.29% and XOP rose 2.25%. The laggards were concentrated in China innovation, robotics/AI, housing, travel and China internet, with CNXT down 6.03%, BOTZ down 3.18%, ITB down 2.85%, JETS down 2.53% and KWEB down 2.44%. The flow picture is more complicated than the performance tape: SOXX attracted $7.31B over 1M and $13.88B YTD despite a -12.99% 1M return, while SMH lost $(4.80B) over 1M despite still having $8.20B YTD inflows. That split reinforces the broader point: investors are not abandoning AI hardware, but they are actively rotating between vehicles and trimming the most crowded expressions.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to allow for a semiconductor and AI infrastructure bounce, but keep the position size disciplined. The latest data show SOXX remains heavily sponsored with $7.31B of 1M inflows and $13.88B YTD, yet the fund is still down 12.99% over 1M. SMH’s $(4.80B) of 1M outflows shows investors are trimming the most crowded AI hardware vehicle even as strategic demand remains intact. Cooler inflation data and strong AI compute read-throughs from TSMC and ASML were bullish supports last week, but the same brief also noted that the earnings bar remains very high and momentum positioning is still elevated. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, AI infrastructure, healthcare innovation, energy exposure and dividend/value ballast, while underweighting China innovation, robotics/AI beta, travel, flow-negative metals and broad disruptive growth until momentum stabilizes and Big Tech earnings provide a cleaner read on AI capex durability.
