A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

China internet, digital economy and blockchain led the latest theme tape, while cannabis, semiconductors, cybersecurity and AI infrastructure lagged as momentum pressure persisted despite another strong AI capex read-through.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop remains rotational rather than broadly risk-off. Wednesday’s market finished higher, but the leadership came from big tech, financials, payments, retail, builders and media, while momentum was again the high-profile laggard as semiconductors, memory and AI infrastructure sold off despite strong ASML results and another constructive AI-capex signal from TSMC’s raised revenue and capex outlook. The market continues to treat US-Iran risk as contained, helped by expectations for an eventual return to diplomacy, but Strait of Hormuz transit risk and elevated oil prices remain important macro overhangs. The key message for thematic investors is that capital is still moving away from the most crowded AI hardware sleeves and into larger-cap internet, China tech, payments and selected software/AI beneficiaries.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show leadership in China internet, digital economy and blockchain. KWEB rose 3.13%, BJK gained 2.33%, PNQI advanced 1.96%, FDIG rose 1.84% and CRPT added 1.65%. Financial themes also screened well, with KBWB up 1.53% and IAI up 1.47%, consistent with recent strength in banks, payments and capital-markets businesses. The weakest areas were cannabis and semiconductors, with CNBS down 3.17%, FTXL down 3.04%, YOLO down 2.94%, MSOS down 2.77% and BUG down 2.69%. The flow picture still favors semiconductor exposure despite weak performance: SOXX attracted $3.80B over 1M and $10.89B YTD, while SMH attracted $1.77B over 1M and $7.48B YTD. However, ARKK, SPY, QQQ, IWM and ARKQ led 1M outflows, showing that investors are still actively reducing some broad growth, disruptive technology and small-cap beta.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to keep semiconductor exposure, but size it carefully because strong AI capex guidance is no longer enough to prevent momentum selling. SOXX and SMH remain flow-confirmed with combined 1M inflows of $5.57B and combined YTD inflows of $18.37B, but both are down sharply over 1M. China internet and internet/digital economy funds are showing better short-term leadership, while blockchain’s bounce remains tactical given weak 1M returns. The preferred posture is overweight selective AI hardware, China internet, quality software, payments/fintech and dividend/value ballast, while underweighting cannabis, high-volatility AI infrastructure, flow-negative metals and broad disruptive growth until retail sales, Philly Fed, housing data and the next wave of earnings confirm whether risk appetite can broaden beyond Mag 7 rotation.
