A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Cybersecurity, copper miners and semiconductors led the latest theme tape, while finance/fintech, biotech, travel and gaming lagged as investors balanced cooler CPI relief with PPI, Warsh testimony and elevated oil risk.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop is improving after Tuesday’s momentum rebound, with semis and memory supported by cooler CPI, lower front-end yields and better earnings read-throughs from ASML’s beat-and-raise and AI-driven EUV capacity guidance. Big bank results also helped sentiment around capital markets, trading and consumer resilience, though the market remains focused on a high Q2 earnings bar, negative preannouncements from IBM, HCA and PNR, and the possibility that AI spending is shifting toward hardware at the expense of traditional software budgets. Geopolitical tensions remain a support for oil, but spillover is still contained by the market’s “escalate-to-deescalate” framework. The key near-term test is whether PPI, Beige Book, Warsh testimony and Thursday’s retail sales data confirm that investors can re-risk beyond a narrow semiconductor bounce.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show cybersecurity and semiconductors leading. BUG rose 5.93%, KOPX gained 5.88%, HACK advanced 4.58%, IHAK rose 4.18% and PSI added 4.10%. The cybersecurity strength is notable because it fits the broader AI-security narrative, while the semiconductor rebound shows investors are still willing to buy AI hardware after ASML’s constructive capacity outlook and Tuesday’s cooler CPI-driven rate relief. The weakest areas were more idiosyncratic and consumer/cyclical-facing: KIE fell 1.52%, PBE lost 1.35%, JETS declined 1.19%, BETZ fell 1.07% and NERD dropped 0.82%. Flow data remain heavily supportive of semiconductor exposure, with SOXX attracting $5.82B over 1M and $12.14B YTD, while SMH attracted $1.92B over 1M and $7.51B YTD. Broad beta and dividend exposure remain well sponsored through VTI and SCHD, while SPY, ARKK, GLD, VUG and ARKQ led 1M outflows.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to re-risk selectively into AI hardware and cybersecurity, but avoid assuming the full momentum complex has cleared the earnings-bar test. SOXX and SMH remain the strongest flow-confirmed semiconductor sleeves, with combined 1M inflows of $7.75B and combined YTD inflows of $19.64B, but both remain negative over 1M, which keeps the group vulnerable to sell-the-news reactions. Cybersecurity is showing better short-term leadership and stronger 1M performance, while copper miners are bouncing from weak monthly levels. The preferred posture is overweight selective semiconductors, cybersecurity, AI infrastructure and dividend/value ballast, while underweighting high-volatility biotech, gaming, travel, flow-negative metals and broad growth beta until PPI, retail sales, Warsh testimony and the next wave of Q2 earnings confirm broader risk appetite.
