Theme Signal
Energy, MLPs and cannabis led the latest theme tape as oil spiked on Strait of Hormuz risk, while semiconductors, AI infrastructure, nuclear and blockchain lagged on another momentum unwind.
Investment Digest
The thematic backdrop remains volatile as investors balance a renewed Middle East oil shock against a still-intact but crowded AI capex narrative. Monday’s tape was dominated by another selloff in semiconductors, memory and AI infrastructure, while crude surged after renewed US-Iran tensions and talk of a potential Strait of Hormuz toll. The Tuesday morning setup is slightly more constructive for Nasdaq futures, helped by stabilization in Asia and a modest momentum bounce, but the market still faces a major catalyst day with CPI, Warsh testimony and the first large bank earnings reports. The key question is whether CPI validates the recent hawkish Fed tone or gives investors room to look through oil-driven inflation risk. For thematic ETF investors, the cleaner near-term leadership is in energy producers, MLPs and defensive/value ballast, while AI hardware exposure should remain selective until semis stop reacting negatively to otherwise supportive demand headlines.
Thematic Tail of the Tape
The latest theme data show energy and cannabis at the top of the daily leaderboard. MSOS rose 4.68%, followed by XOP up 4.17%, CNBS up 3.58%, FCG up 3.26% and AMZA up 2.52%. MLP and energy infrastructure ETFs also participated, with MLPB up 2.08%, ENFR up 1.98%, AMLP up 1.88% and UMI up 1.81%. The weakest areas were concentrated in high-beta biotech, blockchain, nuclear and semiconductors: LABU fell 7.15%, WGMI lost 5.82%, SMRF declined 5.06%, FTXL dropped 4.90% and SOXQ fell 4.86%. Flow data still show investors adding to semiconductor exposure despite the drawdown, with SOXX attracting $4.47B over 1M and $10.78B YTD, while SMH attracted $1.75B over 1M and $7.33B YTD. Broad beta remains supported through VTI, while QQQ, GLD, VUG, KWEB and AIQ led 1M outflows.

Bottom Line
The tactical takeaway is to keep AI hardware exposure, but size it more carefully while oil, CPI and Fed reaction-function risk dominate the tape. SOXX and SMH remain heavily flow-supported, with combined 1M inflows of $6.21B and combined YTD inflows of $18.11B, but both are now negative over 1M and down more than 4% on the day. Energy and MLP exposure are working as geopolitical hedges, while cannabis is only tactical given weak 1M returns. The preferred posture is overweight selective energy producers, MLP/energy infrastructure, dividend/value ballast and carefully chosen AI hardware, while underweighting blockchain, high-volatility biotech, flow-negative metals, China internet and broad growth beta until CPI, Warsh testimony and bank earnings clarify whether the market can re-risk beyond oil-sensitive themes.
