A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

Biotechnology, MLPs and energy infrastructure are leading as geopolitics reasserts itself, while semiconductors, blockchain, clean energy and AI infrastructure remain under pressure.

Investment Digest

The thematic backdrop has shifted back toward risk control as renewed US-Iran escalation, a sharp oil bounce and higher rates challenge the recent broadening-out narrative. Tuesday’s market already showed another momentum unwind, with semiconductors, memory and AI infrastructure more than reversing Monday’s gains, while defensives, energy, healthcare and real estate outperformed. The Wednesday morning setup is more difficult, with S&P and Nasdaq futures lower, WTI up sharply, global equities weaker and yields rising at the front and belly of the curve. The AI capex narrative is not broken, but it is facing a tougher tape: Chinese chip competition, Samsung’s sell-the-news reaction, SK Hynix supply, Amazon’s large bond sale, DeepSeek chip ambitions and OpenAI/Anthropic competition all reinforce the idea that the earnings bar is high and positioning remains crowded. In that context, the better near-term signal is in healthcare innovation, energy infrastructure and dividend/value ballast rather than aggressive AI hardware beta.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show biotechnology and energy infrastructure leading. LABU rose 5.79%, SBIO gained 4.63%, MLPX advanced 3.17%, FCG added 3.09% and TPYP gained 3.00%. That leadership fits the macro mix: biotech is benefiting from deal activity and healthcare rotation, while MLPs and energy infrastructure are being supported by renewed oil/geopolitical risk. The bottom of the tape remains concentrated in crowded growth and speculative beta, with PSI down 7.04%, WGMI down 6.82%, XSD down 6.34%, BKCH down 6.11% and QCLN down 6.08%. Flows are still supportive of broad beta and semiconductor exposure, with VTI taking in $5.16B over 1M, SOXX $2.93B, SCHD $2.83B, SMH $2.66B and AGG $2.30B. However, outflows from GLD at $(2.27B), IGV at $(1.86B), EFV at $(1.05B), ARKK at $(931.35M) and BAI at $(899.22M) show investors are still reducing metals, software, international value, disruptive growth and AI-adjacent exposure.

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to reduce crowded momentum exposure and lean into themes that can hold up if oil, rates and geopolitical risk stay elevated. SOXX and SMH remain flow-confirmed, with combined YTD inflows of $14.30B, but their latest daily losses show that sponsorship is not insulating AI hardware from de-risking. Biotech is the strongest realized momentum sleeve, led by LABU and SBIO, though LABU’s 101.31% 1M gain makes it tactical rather than core. Energy infrastructure and MLPs look more useful as geopolitical hedges than broad commodity beta, while GLD and SLV remain flow-negative. The preferred posture is overweight selective healthcare innovation, MLP/energy infrastructure, quality software, cybersecurity and dividend/value ballast, while keeping semiconductor exposure smaller and more selective and staying underweight blockchain, clean energy beta, broad momentum and flow-negative metals until oil, rates, FOMC minutes and early Q2 earnings catalysts clear.
