A Strategic Resource for Thematic Investors

Thematic ETF Daily Trading Outlook

Theme Signal

MLPs, financials, biotech and software are leading as investors rotate away from crowded AI hardware, while semiconductors, robotics/AI and Natural Resources lag.

Investment Digest

The thematic tape remains in rotation mode after Tuesday’s momentum unwind, with semiconductors and memory under heavy pressure while equal-weight participation, staples, healthcare and other defensive pockets helped cushion the broader market. Recent developments still suggest the AI compute/capex demand narrative is intact, but the market is increasingly focused on mechanics: concentration, leveraged ETF exposure, elevated semi volatility, and whether MU earnings can validate very high expectations after a large memory run. Lower crude remains a positive for inflation and consumer risk sentiment, while Treasuries are stable to firmer and the market continues to move past geopolitics despite unanswered questions around the Strait of Hormuz and Iran nuclear inspections. The tactical read is that investors are not abandoning risk, but they are reducing the most crowded AI hardware sleeves and rotating toward MLPs, financials, biotech and selected software/AI-loser rebounds ahead of MU, PCE inflation, Treasury supply and Fed stress-test results.

Thematic Tail of the Tape

The latest theme data show leadership in MLPs, financials, biotech and software. AMZA led the 1D tape with a 2.77% gain, followed by KIE up 2.35%, LABU up 2.26%, BUG up 2.13% and MLPB up 2.04%. The bottom of the tape was dominated by AI hardware and robotics/AI exposure: FTXL fell 7.99%, BAI lost 7.93%, SOXX declined 7.88%, SOXQ fell 7.82% and PSI dropped 7.60%. The flow picture remains more constructive for broad beta and semiconductors than the daily tape implies, with SPY taking in $12.77B over 1M, QQQ $7.05B, VTI $6.82B, IWM $3.54B and SCHD $3.07B. However, semiconductors are no longer one-way leadership: SOXX still has $1.98B of 1M inflows and a 12.34% 1M return, but its 7.88% daily decline confirms that investors are taking down risk in the most crowded AI hardware trades. Outflows remain concentrated in EFV at $(5.60B), GLD at $(2.38B), KWEB at $(1.06B), MTUM at $(1.04B) and SLV at $(605.81M).

Bottom Line

The tactical takeaway is to keep strategic exposure to AI infrastructure, but reduce crowded semiconductor beta until the memory trade stabilizes and MU confirms the earnings story. SOXX and SMH still have strong YTD sponsorship, but the latest daily losses across FTXL, SOXX, SOXQ, PSI, SMH and XSD show the group remains vulnerable to mechanical de-risking. The better near-term posture is a barbell: maintain selective AI hardware/software exposure, while leaning into financials, MLPs, healthcare/biotech and other broadening-out trades. Stay underweight flow-negative Natural Resources, China internet, broad momentum and the most crowded semiconductor ETFs until PCE, Treasury auctions, Fed stress tests and the memory earnings catalyst clear.
